A 50-year-old Ceres woman reported missing Monday evening was found dead in the Ceres Main Canal the next morning.

Police Lt. Brent Smith identified the victim as Paramjit Kaur.

"It appears that she fell in and drowned," said Smith, who added that an investigation has been opened into the case.

Kaur's body was clothed and bore no signs of foul play.

The woman's family called at 11 p.m. Monday from their Richland Avenue residence to report Kaur missing after she failed to come back after a stroll.

At around 9 a.m. a bystander walking to a Hatch Road store spotted the woman's body caught in a drop just east of Central Avenue near the Turlock Irrigation District electrical station. The canal just south of Walgreen's was taped off with yellow police tape as the scene was investigated and Kaur's body was removed from the water by firefighters.

Detective Rob Robbins said it's not all that uncommon for persons who fall in a canal to not be able to get out.

The drowning was the second in Ceres in two days.
