A 27-year-old Ceres man was arrested early Friday morning after he tried to evade officers who initially tried to stop him from being a road hazard but later found to be intoxicated.

At 2:17 a.m., Ceres Police Sgt. Aaron Pinon was patrolling the area of River Road and Richland Avenue when he saw a Hyundai Elantra parked straddling the road and shoulder. Fearing a hazard, Sgt. Pinon stopped to check on the driver, Jeremy Tavares Cantu, 27, of Ceres, who sped off, committing multiple vehicle code violations on the way. Pinon chased after Cantu. The short pursuit ended when Cantu pulled into the Voyager’s Cove Mobile Home Park at 2845 Hatch Road. Cantu was arrested and officers suspected he was under the influence of alcohol. He failed a series of field sobriety tests, and a breath sample showed that he was over double the legal limit of alcohol for an adult to drive.

Cantu was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of DUI and evading police in a vehicle.
