Ceres man arrested after leading police on chase

Reports of a man driving a tan-colored vehicle on the sidewalk and grabbing a female subject led to a police chase and arrest of the suspect early Friday.

Ceres Police officers were dispatched at 12:41 a.m. to the 1600 block of Whitmore Avenue to search for the driver and quickly located a grey-colored Chevrolet HHR believed to be involved. The driver, Rene Cervantes, 40, of Ceres fled and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s helicopter was summoned and as the pursuit ended in an alleyway in the area of Herndon Road and Eugene Avenue at which the air crew saw Cervantes run from the vehicle and hop several fences to hide in the front yard of a home in the 1200 block of Nadine Avenue. With the help of sheriff’s deputies, a perimeter was setup, and officers took Cervantes into custody. Drug paraphernalia was found in his pocket. A routine records check revealed that Cervantes was on probation and had a felony warrant related to an assault.

He was arrested and booked into Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the felony warrant, and new charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, evading police in a vehicle and resisting arrest.
