A 36-year-old Ceres man who appeared to be intoxicated was arrested early Sunday morning after he failed in his attempt to flee from the officer trying to pull him over.

At 3:05 a.m., Ceres Police Sgt. Aaron Pinon was patrolling the area of Whitmore Avenue and Mitchell Road when he attempted to stop the driver of a Toyota Prius for vehicle code violations. The driver, Varun Datta, 36, of Ceres accelerated and the officer chased after him. The pursuit led officers to the 3200 block of Rhone Road where Datta finally pulled over to the side of the road. Datta was arrested and, officers detected the odor of alcohol on his breath.

Datta, who had an arrest warrant for an assault charge, was given a series of field sobriety tests by Officer Chrim-Marquez, which indicated that he was under the influence of alcohol. Datta was arrested for DUI and provided a breath sample that showed he had double the legal limit of alcohol in his body to legally drive a vehicle.

Datta was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on a charge of DUI, evading police in a vehicle and the warrant.
