One man was killed, one injured and another jailed after a fatal Sunday morning hit-and-run crash in South Modesto.

The crash occurred at 5:30 a.m. on W. Hatch Road approximately 200 yards west of Ustick Road.

Modesto Police believed that Daniel Zaragoza, 37, was driving a Chevy Traverse while intoxicated westbound on Hatch Road and drifted into a parked Toyota Prius parked on the north side at curb line and occupied by two men believed to be homeless. The impact killed a 52-year-old Ceres man while the other occupant sustained only complaints of pain.

When police arrived Zaragoza had fled the scene but was quickly located and arrested. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run, driving while being unlicensed and drunken driving.

The name of the dead man was not released pending notification of relatives. It’s believed that he was recently a Ceres resident.
