Ceres Police arrested two of three drivers who were observed engaged in street racing on Highway 99 earlier this month but impounded all three vehicles.

The third driver is at large.

Ceres Police Officer Charles Lord-Huff was patrolling the area near Highway 99 and Hatch Road at approximately 11:47 p.m. on Friday evening, March 14 when he saw three vehicles side-by-side traveling ahead of him on southbound Highway 99. The three vehicles then rapidly accelerated to speeds of approximately 100 mph as they raced one another.

Officer Lord-Huff activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop with two of the three drivers pulling over. Arrested for illegal street racing were a minor and Eduardo Cazarez, 19, of Ceres. Both vehicles were towed and impounded for 30 days.

The driver of a Ford Mustang sped off.

Officer Lord-Huff obtained a court-ordered seizure of the Ford Mustang, which was signed by a judge. Officer Kevin Gallenkamp located the Mustang on Friday and it had it towed and impounded for 30 days due to its involvement in the illegal speed contest.

The state vehicle code allows a judge to issue a court order for the 30-day impoundment of a vehicle involved in street racing. To have the vehicle released before the end of this period, the owner must request a hearing with a magistrate.
