Suspect tried to flee officer but motorcycle failed him

A 44-year-old motorcyclist from Modesto was arrested after he led Ceres Police on a high-speed pursuit Wednesday evening, Sept. 6. The pursuit ended when the motorcycle slowed due to mechanical problems.

The incident began at 10:48 p.m., when Ceres Police Officer Aaron Pinon was on patrol in the area of Whitmore Avenue and Fowler Road and spotted the rider of a Kawasaki motorcycle speeding down the road. The officer Pinon pursued Shane Smith, 44, of Modesto who decided he could outrun police. Smith made a U-turn on Whitmore Avenue and began traveling eastbound on but his motorcycle slowed down.

Smith, who had a suspended driver’s license because of a DUI felony conviction, was arrested. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center for felony evading a police officer, driving on a suspended license for DUI and a parole violation.
