City offers pool time, swim lessons & more this summer

The Ceres Recreation Department has planned a heavy offering of classes, sports and aquatics this summer designed to interest just about any youth – and a smattering of things for the adults to do as well.

The popular summer aquatics program offered by the city of Ceres takes at the Ceres High School pool. 

Open recreational swim sessions will be offered at the pool from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from June 14 to August 3. Cost is $2 per adult and $1 per child. Children 12 and younger must be supervised by an adult. All participants must wear swimming suits only in the pool. Flotation devices are not allowed, however Coast Guard approved life jackets are. Concessions will be available.

A special Aquatic Family Night at the pool will take place on Saturday, August 3 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost will be $10 per family (up to five persons and $3 per additional). Admission includes a hot dog, bag of chips and water for each person in the party. Registration is recommended to plan for enough food but not required and limited drop-ins will be allowed.

A team of Red Cross certified staff members will be offering swimming classes at the Ceres High School pool to teach youngsters six months and older how to swim. All classes are $50 per child and preregistration is required online at www.ci.ceres.ca.us, in person at the Ceres Community Center, 2701 Fourth Street, or by phoning 209-538-5628.

Session 1 runs June 10-20, Session 2 takes place July 8-18 and session 3 starts July 22 and ends Aug. 1. 

“Parent & Me” swimming lessons for children six months to three years and 11 months of age are offered. 

The toddler and pre-school classes are basically about making children more independent in the water.

Level 1-3 is for children five to six years old; Level 4/5 is for children six years and older; and there are classes for teens and adults.

Aqua-Fit Ceres classes for adults taught by Jana Kirchert will be available this summer during the evening (7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.) from June 10 to July 3; and during the day and evenings from July 8 to August 1.

Aqua Fitness and Aqua Zumba classes will be offered twice a week for a water aerobics workout which incorporates a blend of cardio and resistance training designed to tone the body with no impacts to the joints.

The low-impact Aqua Fitness class is suitable for persons of all ages and fitness levels. Participants 18 and older will need to bring buoyant water weights, a noodle and water to drink.

AquaFit Zuma combo classes are offered as well, the cost of this is $65. AquaFit is another fitness class that incorporates Zumba which is an invigorating water workout and is a high-energy exercises. Participants need to bring buoyant water weights, a noodle water to drink and water shoes are recommended, this class is also 18 and up.

Zumba classes for adults, instructed by Jana Kirchert, are offered 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $15 standard, $10 for seniors aged 55 and older.

Adult Yoga classes are taught at various sessions by Cindy Curci on Mondays, from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.; Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The cost varies from $8 for a drop-in session, to a one class a week costing $20, two classes per week costing $40 and the ability to attend all four classes each week for a month at $70.


Youth programs

Junior cooking classes are offered Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those aged 6-13. The classes cost $15 per child. The following is a list of classes:

• June 12 – Mini desserts

• June 19 – Fourth of July snacks

• July 17 – Breakfast

• July 24 – Appetizers

• July 31 – Making school lunches

The city offers a free program for high quality and engaged tutoring for elementary students (aged 6-10) in the subjects of math, reading and writing. To schedule an appointment, call Amber Crabtree at 209-779-4624.

Youth Dance classes have been a big hit with those aged 6 to 17 years of age depending on the session. Each session costs $75. Classes offered include Contemporary, Jr. Ballet I – III, Jr. Hip-Hop, Jr. Jazz, Teen Hip-Hop, Ballet: Baby & me, Dance Basics, Pre-Ballet and Pre- Dance. Registration is closed at this time, however if interested in any, visit the city’s website at ci.ceres.ca.us/235/Recreation-Department and register when they become available. Classes fill up fast.

New this year is STEM classes open to children aged 8 to 14 to teach children hands-on skills that will help them in the future. Registration costs $2.

Virtual Driver’s Education is available for teens 15 years of age or older. The interactive, online course has videos, animated driving scenarios and sample test questions. Students will learn the rules of the road, major causes of traffic crashes, DMV procedures and more. Upon successful completion, students will receive DMV approved certificates required for teens under the age of 17-and-a-half years to obtain a learner’s permit and drivers’ license. Teens may sign up and complete the course at any time, or with an instructor over Zoom. No behind-the-wheel training is offered. The cost for online access is $49.99 per child. Sessions with an instructor on Zoom cost $235 and are offered 9 a.m. to 12 noon in these weeks: June 12-21, July 8-12 and July 12-Aug. 2.


Seniors

Seniors 55 years of age and older are invited to partake in the Senior Lounge at the Community Center to socialize, relax, enjoy coffee, play games, learn new things and eat lunch.

The city has partnered with United Samaritans for lunches offered Monday through Thursday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Seniors are asked to call 24 hours in advance to reserve a lunch by calling 209-480-4508. Donations are accepted. Those who are under 60 years of age are required to buy lunch for $6. For more information, visit the website at ci.ceres.ca.us/235/Recreation-Department.

Additional activities for seniors are being planned, like the Senior Meet up at Sciabica’s Olive Oil from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 19. There is no charge to attend.
