Fifteen Ceres duplex dwellers were displaced last week after their homes caught fire while a South Modesto homeowner was luckier when their house was saved in a Sunday afternoon fire.

The Ceres duplex, located in the 1900 block of Glen Ridge Drive broke out at 3:01 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18. Modesto Fire Department had a truck nearby and was on scene within minutes. However, the two two-story units were on fire and an attack was made on the flames.

One firefighter was seen holding a cat that was rescued from the burning structure and returned to its owner.

Before it was over, 10 adults and five children had no home and received assistance from the local American Red Cross for temporary housing.

Glenn Avenue fire

On Sunday afternoon at 2:32 p.m., Modesto Fire Department was dispatched to a vegetation fire in an alley on Glenn Avenue in south Modesto. When firefighters arrived they found grass, fence and trash burning in the backyard of three homes, with one of the homes beginning to burn. The call was quickly upgraded to a working residential structure fire to bring additional units to the attack. Due to the heat and potential for fire spread, a second alarm was called. Firefighters made an aggressive attack, stopping the fire with only minor damage to one home.

The fire investigation unit was on scene conducting a cause and origin investigation.
