A 33-year-old Sonora man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a Geer Road traffic crash north of Hatch Road and south of the road to the Fox Grove Fishing Access.
The crash, which occurred at 2:27 p.m., is being blamed on the driver who survived, Vidal Calderon, 61, of Delhi.
A preliminary investigation by the California Highway Patrol noted that Calderon was traveling southbound on Geer Road in his Chevy pickup approaching Hatch Road when he drifted to the right into a raised asphalt curb parallel to the road. The pickup then veered sharply to the left, entering the northbound lane directly toward the Nissan driven by the Sonora victim. The head-on crash sent the Nissan off the east edge of the road and coming to rest in a southwest direction. Calderon’s pickup came to rest on its passenger side, straddling the east edge of the roadway facing north.
The Sonora man was declared dead at the scene. Calderon was rushed by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries.
The CHP said that drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in the collision.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
Geer Road was temporarily closed between Hatch Road and Jantzen Road as emergency personnel investigated and cleaned up the scene.
