A Hughson High School senior sustained fatal injuries in a Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 16 crash at Roberts Ferry east of Waterford, leaving her family, friends and the Hughson community in mourning.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:02 p.m. on Yosemite Boulevard as Abbegail Stoneham, 17 was headed back to her home in the La Grange area.

The California Highway Patrol said Stoneham was driving eastbound in a 2001 Toyota sedan when she approached a leftward curve in the roadway east of Crabtree Road. For unknown reasons, Stoneham lost control of her car which spun counterclockwise into the westbound traffic lane directly in the path of a westbound 1995 Toyota pickup driven by Billy Stilley, 83, of Modesto. The pickup collided with the rear of Stoneman’s car, forcing it to come to rest on the north shoulder. Stilley’s pickup came to rest straddling both lanes of Highway 132. Stilley and passenger Jason Crum, 45, of Turlock, were taken to Memorial Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Stoneham sustained critical injuries and was taken to Memorial Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

All three occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, according to the CHP.

A GoFundMe account is collecting donations for burial expenses and on Monday had raised $22,345 toward the $30,000 goal.

Michelle Coatney who organized the GoFundMe account posted: “Abbe was a radiant light in the lives of everyone she touched. Her joyful spirit, infectious smile, and unshakable faith left an impression on all who knew her. We find peace in knowing that her unwavering faith in Jesus means she is walking with Him now, and while we grieve her loss here on Earth, we know she is held in His embrace.”

Abbegail was the daughter of Cory and Kacey Stoneham of La Grange.
