It’s becoming a frequent problem: pallet yards burning in the Modesto and Ceres area but Friday’s fire in the 600 block of Janopaul Lane spread to other buildings and caused an estimated $1.2 million in damage.
The ferocious fire broke out at around 7:27 p.m. and burned up approximately 200,000 pallets made of wood, a number of tractor-trailers, one RV and a house on the property.
The intensity of the inferno made firefighting difficult, according to a statement from the Modesto Fire Department. “Burning power poles and overhead electrical lines further complicated operations. One firefighter sustained a heat-related injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment but was released shortly thereafter,” the department noted.
Modesto Fire was assisted by departments coming from Turlock, Patterson, Ripon, Stanislaus Consolidated and a strike team from San Joaquin County.
On Monday afternoon at 2:38 p.m. eight fire engines, three water tenders and one truck were dispatched to a fire that destroyed six mobile homes in the Del Rio Mobile Home park at 433 South Seventh Street.
“Crews were challenged with a distant water supply and a fast-spreading fire,” said Modesto Fire in an incident summary
The Red Cross provided assistance for 16 adults and 10 children displaced by the fire, which is still being investigated for a cause.
Also on Monday, a vegetation fire broke out on Hatch Road near the freeway. The fire was reported at 1:21 p.m. and small enough to be extinguished by one unit.
