A passenger car was destroyed and a truck overturned onto its side in a Wednesday morning crash at the intersection of Keyes and Mountain View roads east of Keyes.

A third vehicle was also involved but miraculously only one person was injured and his injuries were minor.

According to California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Tom Olsen, the crash took place at 7:42 a.m. about 20 feet east of Mountain View Road. The crash was caused when Jose Abarca, 23, of Merced drove north on Mountain View Road and stopped his 2008 Mercedes sedan at the stop sign at Keyes Road but then began to make a right onto Keyes Road in front of an eastbound vehicle. The Mercedes sideswiped the 2018 Case Titan 810 farm vehicle driven by 66-year-old William Ottman of Turlock. The Case Titan then entered the westbound lane of Keyes Road where it hit a westbound 2018 Peterbilt tanker driven by David Abrams, 33, of Ione. Abrams was driving for Ford Construction Inc. The tanker flipped onto its side, spilling some fuel into the ground on the north side of Keyes Road.

The Peterbilt came to rest on the north side of Keyes Road while the Mercedes sheared off the wooden utility pole at the southwest corner of the intersection.

Abarca was the only person injured in the crash. Sustaining only minor injuries he was taken to Doctors Medical Center for treatment.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department oversaw the cleanup of the hazardous materials spill. The wreckage and cleanup resulted in the roads closed for hours.
