A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 at Eaton Family Funeral Home, 513 12th St., Modesto, for Charles Arthur "Art" Lind Jr., 84, of Ceres. He died Sept. 28, 2010.
A memorial dinner will follow at 4 p.m. at Ceres American Legion Memorial Building Hall, corner of Ninth and Lawrence streets.
Born Dec. 2, 1925 in Richmond, Charles went to school in Chicago. In 1944, he served in the Army. He met his wife, Mary, while ice skating in Modesto. They got married in 1947 in Modesto and had five children. Charles worked at Printing Company in Chicago for 18 years. He worked at B&T Market in Modesto, Rose Bros Produce, Modesto, P.F.E. Ice Puller, Norris, Inc. as a set man and lath operator, and Awalt Electric. On Nov. 13, 1978, after having a stroke, he began a class at the YMCA to help himself and other people. In 1990, he was named "Volunteer Of The Year" in Modesto; and in 1991 named "Volunteer Of The Year" in Ceres. Art belonged to many organizations and was commander Ceres post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for three years and also vice commander of the American Legion post in Ceres for eight years. Mr. Lind also served as president of the Stroke Club for two years. He also was a member of the Waterford Sportsmen's Club, Modesto-Stanislaus Wheelers RV Club, Ceres Senior Citizen Club; and Honor Guard. He loved to roller skate with his family and friends until 2003, and enjoyed playing golf.
He leaves behind his children, Lucille Throne of Monterey, Celeste Joy of Modesto, David Lind of Ceres and Kenneth Lind of Modesto; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, daughter Alita, and three grandsons.
