Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home for Maria K. Nielsen, 98, of Hughson. She died Dec, 8, 2010.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lakewood Funeral Home, followed by a private graveside committal.
Born April 22, 1912 in Gustine to Christen and Elfrida Schmidt, Maria married Edward "Ivan" Nielsen in 1933. They moved to Hughson where Ed was a blacksmith. Marie was a homemaker and bookkeeper for the shop. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Danish Lodge. In 2005 she was named a Distinguished Citizen of Hughson. Mrs. Nielsen enjoyed cooking, playing pinochle, and gathering around the kitchen table to share coffee and homemade cookies.
She leaves behind her children, Nancy Harris and Karl Nielsen; her grandchildren, Maury Nielsen, Kent, Lynette Harris, Janell Harris, Ann Palmer; and four great-grandchildren, Karina, Katie, David, Jonathan.
