Editor, Ceres Courier,
On June 6, President Biden was asked by ABC’s David Muir if he would rule out pardoning his son Hunter Biden for criminal federal gun charges. The president, who was still a candidate for the Democratic Party ticket replied, “Yes” as he indicated he would not interfere with the legal proceedings taking place in Delaware. Now, the lame-duck president took advantage of one of his executive privileges to issue a full pardon to his son two weeks before his sentencing was about to begin. This should raise questions within the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party, which has set precedent into litigating and leading on numerous political scandals including recently with Sen. Menendez of New Jersey, needs to hold President Biden and his criminally convicted son to a higher standard.
Hunter Biden was given a fair trial. This was carried out by the Justice Department under President Biden’s leadership. I do not believe this was an issue that was as polarized as partisans claim. Hunter Biden broke the law according to the statutes set in place and he should be sentenced accordingly. End of story – right? Wrong. There is no justice. Instead, it displays Washington corruption on a grand scale. The current administration’s gross lack of accountability and gaslighting of the American people has set back liberalism and is one of the many reasons we lost in November. President Biden should have not issued a pardon. Not to mention, it’s another Republican talking point.
I think had the president stuck to his word, the American people would appreciate that Joe Biden genuinely respects the rule of law. There are many conflicts of interests to take into consideration and it should merit some level of discussion from Democrats.
