There have been well-deserved comments lately about the need for a pedestrian crosswalk across Fifth Street adjacent to Ceres High School. Over 2,000 students populate Ceres High School on a daily basis while school is in session.

No one is asking for a pedestrian overpass across Whitmore Avenue; many are asking for just extended school zone signage, along with a crosswalk.

In Modesto, there is a blinking midblock crosswalk across College Avenue where maybe hundreds of students cross daily to get access to Modesto Junior College. This blinking crosswalk only works when people are using it. This gives ample warning for all vehicles to slow down and give the right of way to pedestrians.

The city of Ceres and maybe the Ceres Unified School District should put their strategic thinking together to solve this matter. I have no basis to state that this is an accident wanting to happen. We need to listen to the repetitive voices of those who use this intersection.

I think the monies can come from various reserve funds in the school district and city of Ceres. At the very least, the city government should put this project at the top of the list of things to do in their annual capital improvement items.

As the saying goes, "where there is a will, there is a way."
