Ceres High's boys swim program qualified several individuals and relay teams for May 9th's CIF Sac-Joaquin Section meet.

"It's an all-day thing," Bulldogs coach Sue Garcia said. "Hopefully, we'll do well. It's going to be hard because when you get to sections you're a little fish in a big sea."

Senior Vince Wester posted section-qualifying times in the 100 back, 100 fly and 500 free.

"You can only swim in two events," Garcia said. "He'll do the fly and free."

Senior Ryan Calou qualified in the 500 free and 100 free.

Junior Shane Nunes qualified in the 100 fly and 100 back.

Sophomore Aaron Cunningham earned the right to compete in the 50 free at the frosh-soph level. He opted out to help Ceres High's section-qualifying 400 free relay team. Cunningham will team up with Calou, Wester and Nunes. Tony Chavez will serve as alternate.

The Bulldogs' 200 free relay team, which consists of Nunes, Wester, Calou and Chavez, advanced as well. Cunningham will be the alternate.

"I think the boys are going to do great," Garcia said. "We should see some pretty good times."

Ceres' 200 medley relay team qualified, but it won't compete due to the two-event limit.

Standout Hawk

Victor Cruz will represent Central Valley High School at the frosh-soph boys section trials. The freshman notched a qualifying time of 25.85 seconds in the 50 free during last week's Valley Oak League meet in Sonora.

"I'm not surprised at all," Hawks coach Amy Kline said. "He's worked really hard all season. He improved his stroke a lot."

The season-ending meet will feature a plethora of talent.

"This year will definitely be a learning experience for him," Kline said. "It's a different environment. The competition's tough."

Section trials will be held at Tokay High School in Lodi with competition slated to get underway at 10 a.m.
