Ceres softball teams enjoy success in Turlock

Three Ceres Sizzle travel softball teams competed at the NSA Father’s Day Classic Tournament in Turlock earlier this month.

Ceres’ 10-and-under team placed second overall while competing in the Silver Bracket of the June 15-16 event at Pedretti Park.

“They struggled Saturday going up against some tough teams,’’ head coach Audel Valencia said. “Sunday, they came out with a lot of confidence. They played much better defense and had more competitive at-bats.”

The Sizzle posted a 2-3 overall record.

Ceres won two of three games in bracket play on June 16.

The third-seeded Sizzle lost 7-5 to top-seeded CV Liberty in the finals.

Ceres cruised to a 13-4 win over seventh-seeded Mid Valley Elite in the semifinals.

The Sizzle beat the sixth-seeded South Valley Stealth 10-5 in the quarterfinals.

Ceres dropped a pair of games in pool play on June 15.

The Sizzle lost to Valley Kids (15-3) and Lickity Split (8-1).

Ceres competed with a 13-player roster.

Jasmine Adams, Areley Aguinaga, Alayah Alvarado, Birelle Avila, Beatriz Cantu, Noemi Garcia, Adilynn Ken, Natalee Martin, Abby Montesdeoca, Jayleen Pena, Livvi Stevens, Alayiah Resendiz and Maliya Valencia earned roster spots on the team following tryouts.

The Sizzle 8-and-under team finished in the top four in the Gold Bracket.

“We’re a new team,” first-year head coach Jessica Lopez said. “We’ve only been practicing for a month. We qualified for the Gold Bracket, which is really cool. The girls are doing well. We’re getting so many compliments on our defense.”

Ceres amassed a 2-2-1 overall record.

The Sizzle went 1-1 in bracket play on June 16.

Fourth-seeded Ceres fell 5-0 to the first-seeded Enforcers in the semifinals.

“We came up a little short. The team we lost to plays year-round."

The Sizzle shut out the fifth-seeded CTC Crushers 4-0 in the quarterfinals.

Ceres collected one win, one tie and one loss in pool play on June 15.

The Sizzle routed the Oakdale All-Stars (11-1), tied CTC Crushers (3-3) and lost to Lickity Split (4-3).

Lopez assembled her team following a pair of tryouts in April.

A total of 14 players earned roster spots, including Camila Alvarez, Kinsley Becerra, Remi Carraway, Aliyah Gallegos, Olivia Garcia, Ella Goblirsch, Victoria Gutierrez, Mallory Hedden, Alexia Lopez, Lea Poulos, Preslee Tyler, Zoe Valadez, Juliet Valencia and Emma Yorba.

The Sizzle practiced for the first time in May.

“This team was built from rec (play),” Lopez said. “The girls have so much talent and heart. They’re starting to really support each other. You can totally see it.”

When asked about expectations for the Sizzle, Lopez said: “It’s about learning and having fun. That’s what they’re doing every day. My whole goal is developing players throughout Central Valley. “I grew up playing at Costa Fields,” Lopez said. “Then I played at Ceres High School and Dominican University. Now, it’s full circle. My daughter is playing and I’m coaching.”

The Sizzle 16-and-under travel team reached the semifinals while playing the the Silver Bracket of the NSA Father’s Day Classic Tournament.

“For our first tournament, I thought the girls did pretty good,” head coach Jeff Graham said. “Honestly, I had no expectation. I didn’t know where we stood. We have a really young team. We have a lot of new girls. They’re on an upward path.”

Ceres compiled a 2-3 overall record.

The Sizzle finished 1-1 in bracket play on June 16.

Third-seeded Ceres suffered an 11-2 loss against second-seeded 209 Storm in the semifinals.

Ceres rolled to a 14-2 victory over the sixth-seeded OBSA All-Stars in the quarterfinals.

The Sizzle won one of three games in pool play on June 15.

Ceres defeated Atwater Flight (7-4).

The Sizzle lost by one run to both the OBSA All-Stars (13-12) and Bases Academy (10-9).

Graham held tryouts for his team on April 27 and 28.

Thirteen players earned roster spots, including Shelby Alves, Love Arballo, Crystal Cabral, Journey Estrella, Payton Graham, Sydney Graham, Ella Lewis, Janessa McClure, Kayli Parker, Noelle Ramos, Savannah Robinson, Selene Valencia and Marian Verdugo.

“Our team chemistry is very good,” coach Graham said. “They’re going to the movies tonight (Sunday) as a team. They get along really well.”
