Returning and prospective members of Ceres High’s girls basketball program had a busy offseason.
Bulldog players played a total of 20 games together while teaming up under third-year head coach Megan McGill’s guidance.
Ceres High competed in the Modesto Junior College Summer League, which got underway on June 1 and ended on June 30.
Games were played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Bulldogs’ summer-league roster featured 16 players, including Arrayah Stallworth, Sovannary Carter, Savannah Leifried, Persia Rochell, Lilly Staggs, Makaela Brown, Hailey Tsurui, Bri Tsurui, Presley Vierra, Jayden Garcia, Haley Clark, Jolissa Guillory, Isis Picazo, Yesenia Baeza and Camila Simms.
“The girls played really well,” McGill said. “The first half (of the season), everyone was gelling well together. The second half, we had several girls go to the UOP (Camp) so we had less numbers. The last day, we played three games with six players, so that was rough, but everyone was able to improve over the summer. I’m excited to have everyone together for the (upcoming) season.”
Ceres High enjoyed one of its most productive seasons to date during the 2023-24 school year.
The Bulldogs compiled a 21-8 overall record, finished second in the Western Athletic Conference with an 11-3 mark and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for the first time since 2012-13.
Ceres High will look to build on last year’s success this winter.
“This team could be really good,” McGill said. “We’re returning three starters and several key players and we’re getting some great girls from the JV level.”
Ceres High will be led by Stallworth and Carter.
Stallworth and Carter both earned second-team all-WAC honors as sophomores.
Stallworth, a center, averaged 9.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.9 blocks and 1.3 steals per game.
Carter, a forward, averaged 9.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest.
“They’re improving every day so I can’t wait to see what this team does next year,” McGill said.
