Sizzle shine in front of home softball fans

The Ceres Sizzle Softball Organization hosted a tournament, Nov. 9-10, at the George Costa Ball Field Complex.

The Sizzle 16-and-under team finished in first place at the Turkey Bash.

“It was our last tournament together so we all wanted to end as champions,” head coach Nikole Ferrel said.

Ceres amassed a 4-0 overall record in front of its home fans.

The Sizzle shut out the San Lorenzo Heat 4-0 in the finals on Nov. 10.

Ceres won all three of its games in pool play to secure the top seed.

The Sizzle notched victories against Aloha Pride (14-1), San Lorenzo Heat (5-1) and California Valley Firecrackers (9-2).

Ceres claimed two titles and placed second twice while competing in four tournaments this season.

The Audel Valencia-led Ceres Sizzle 10-and-under team continued its late-season resurgence by taking first in front of its home fans.

Ceres placed in its second consecutive tournament.

“It was a great accomplishment for our girls to finish the season strong,” Valencia said. “You could see how happy they all were to see all the hard work pay off.”

The top-seeded Sizzle defeated the Storm 7-2 in the championship game on Nov. 10.

The Sizzle routed Red Shield 14-1 in the semifinals on Nov. 10.

Ceres was awarded the top seed after collecting wins against Sizzle-Lopez (4-2), Red Shield (13-3) and Storm (6-5) on Nov. 9.

“Every girl exceeded expectations,” Valencia said. “Our hitters hit the ball well and came through for us in key moments. Our pitchers made it difficult for teams to put the ball in play.”

Ceres placed in two of six tournaments this year.

The Sizzle 14-and-under team placed second.

Ceres advanced to its fourth straight championship game.

“When I looked at the signups for the tournament, I expected us to be right there based on how we’ve been playing,” head coach Jeff Graham stated. 

The Sizzle compiled a 2-3 record.

Second-seeded Ceres lost 9-4 to the Stockton Lightning in the finals on Nov. 10.

The Sizzle totaled seven hits on offense.

Marian Verdugo batted 1-for-2 with one triple and two runs.

Love Arballo batted 1-for-1 with one RBI.

Payton Graham batted 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Janessa McClure had one RBI.

Selene Valencia had one run.

Shelby Alves had three singles and two stolen bases.

The Sizzle defeated the Madera Destroyers 17-5 in the semifinals on Nov. 10.

Ceres scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Sizzle collected eight hits versus the Destroyers.

Sydney Graham batted 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs.

Valencia batted 2-for-2 with one double, two RBIs, three runs and one stolen base.

Genevieve Armenta batted 1-for-1 with one double, two RBIs, one run and two stolen bases.

Journey Estrella had three runs and one stolen base.

McClure had one double, one RBI and two runs.

Kayli Parker had one single, one RBI, one run and one stolen base.

Payton Graham had one RBI and one run.

Noelle Ramos had one run and one stolen base.

Juliana Cuevas had one run.

Ceres won one of three games in seeding play on Nov. 9.

The Sizzle topped the Destroyers (9-5) and lost to the Lightning (7-2) and Dinuba Tribes (10-6).

Ceres has placed first twice and second three times this season.
