Central Valley High School's varsity girls basketball team won one of its two games last week.
Alyssa Long made two foul shots with 6.7 seconds remaining to lift the Hawks to a 44-42 win over Beyer in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 30 in Ceres.
"I told her to relax and put them in," Central Valley head coach Jesse Padilla said. "She looked confident when she got up there."
Central Valley shot 69 percent (9 of 13) from the charity stripe. The Hawks missed 10 of 14 free throws in a 48-43 loss to Enochs on Nov. 26.
"The work they're putting in is paying off," Padilla said.
Central Valley trailed 14-6 late in the first quarter.
Junior Penny Chanthavong tied the game at 42-all when she converted a pair of free throws with 13.2 seconds left in regulation.
Beyer had a chance to take a two-point lead before Long played the role of hero.
Alyssa registered a steal on defense. After being intentionally fouled, she hit two double-bonus free throws.
Long totaled eight points.
Myra Naranjo scored a team-high 11 points.
Hawks 34, Patriots 9
Central Valley High School's freshman girls basketball team had impressive outing against Beyer last week.
The Hawks pounded the Patriots 34-9 on Tuesday, Nov. 30 in Ceres.
"It seemed like everything was working," head coach Julie Gant said. "It's the first game Beyer played. I'm sure that had something to do with it. We still got lots of stuff to work on."
Veronica Duarte scored a game-high 10 points for the Hawks (2-1).
Central Valley led 16-3 at intermission.
Bulldogs place 7th
Ceres High School's freshman girls basketball team showed marked improvement at its home tournament last week.
The Bulldogs avoided posting a winless record with a 39-9 victory over Downey in the seventh-place game on Saturday at Blaker-Kinser Jr. High School.
Point guard Kayla Neal led Ceres High (1-2) with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Tessa Corsaut had nine points and nine rebounds.
