Central Valley’s and Ceres High’s girls golf programs had a combined five players earn all-league honors this fall.

Hawk 11th-grader Kali Bernal garnered second-team all-Central California Conference recognition, while Bulldog juniors Brooke Trio and Allison Lewis were both selected to the Western Athletic Conference Second Team.

Central Valley senior Annalyse Perry and Ceres High sophomore Kyleigh Robinson were honorable-mention selections.

“They earned it,” Bulldogs’ head coach Ron Edwards said. “They did well all year.”

“Kali did a great job,” Hawks’ leader Kelly Wheelock said. “I’m proud of her. She’s been playing since freshman year. She continues to improve. She puts in the work.”

Bernal, a junior, advanced to Divisionals for the first time.

She earned the CCC’s third individual berth.

She missed qualifying for Divisionals by one spot last year.

“She earned it this year,” Wheelock said. “She definitely worked for it. It goes back to the amount of work and time she put into it. Hopefully, she continues to improve and lands in this spot again.”

Bernal was Central Valley’s CCC Sportsmanship Award winner as a sophomore.

“This year, she drove the ball better,” Wheelock said. “That was her biggest improvement.”

Perry, a senior, showed improvement during her first season of golf.

Trio and Lewis qualified for Divisionals this season after finishing eighth and 10th respectively, in the WAC’s individual standings.

They pushed each other to do better in a supportive way.

“It wasn’t a rivalry,” Edwards said. “They had fun. They enjoyed every moment they played.”

Trio and Lewis both earned all-conference accolades for the second year in a row.

“I’m pretty happy,” Trio said. “I improved a bunch. I had fun.”

Trio was selected to the WAC First Team as a sophomore.

“She practiced a lot over the summer,” Edwards said. “She kept texting me and telling me how good she was hitting the ball. It gave her confidence.”

Lewis was named to the WAC Second Team for the second straight season.

“Her scores were more solid this year,” Edwards said. “She was more consistent. She started to hit the ball better and further. That helped her a lot.”

Trio and Lewis qualified for Divisionals for the third year in a row this fall.

Lewis didn’t compete at the tournament this season for personal reasons.

“I think both of them should be able to make Masters next year,” Edwards said. “That’s my expectation for them.”

“I really want to make it to Masters,” Trio stated. “Me and my dad are going to start practicing twice a week. He might put me in golf lessons.”

A newcomer to the sport, Robinson ranked 18th in the WAC’s individual standings.

“I think she did a great job,” Edwards said. “This was her first year playing golf. She can get a lot better.”

Ceres High and Central Valley both placed fourth while competing at their respective end-of-year conference tournaments.

The Bulldogs posted a team score of 686 at the WAC Championships on Oct. 17 at Dryden Park.

Lewis led Ceres High with a 102.

Trio fired a 118, while Robinson carded a 140.

The Hawks posted a team score of 629 at the Central California Conference Championships on Oct. 16 at Merced Country Club.

Bernal shot a 115.

Perry finished with a round of 140.

Central Valley tied for fifth place in the CCC regular-season standings with Golden Valley.

The two teams compiled identical 5-7 records.

The Hawks lost by forfeit three times this season due to a lack of numbers.

Central Valley had players miss matches for appointments and tests.

Ceres High placed sixth with a 4-10 record in the WAC standings.

The Bulldogs forfeited four matches this year because of a thin roster.
