Central Valley’s girls soccer team continued its run of dominance against Western Athletic Conference competition this past week.

Ceres High extended its unbeaten streak to six games versus league opponents.

“The girls are playing really good soccer right now,” Hawks’ head coach Miguel Larranaga said. “They’ve been working hard. That’s why we were able to get first place. We’re looking forward to playoffs.”

Playoff-bound Central Valley clinched the WAC title with an 8-0 victory at seventh-place Lathrop on Thursday.

The Hawks improved to 19-2-1 overall and 12-1-0 in the league standings.

“Every team wanted to beat us because we were the favorites,” Larranaga said. “But you have to prove it on the field. That’s what we did.”

Central Valley’s Ashley Juarez scored a team-high three goals versus Lathrop.

Evelyn Rivera had two goals.

Aaralyn Jauregui had one goal and two assists.

Camila Orozco had one goal and one assist.

Marcella Larranaga had one goal.

Central Valley outscored its league opponents, 72-3, en route to claiming the WAC championship.

Dominant on defense, the Hawks have accumulated 11 shutout victories.

Central Valley will participate in the playoffs for the second year in a row.

“It’s always special to get first place,” coach Larranaga said. “We’re very happy. We’re proud of the girls. They did an amazing job.”

Second-place Ceres High secured its 10th straight playoff berth with a 2-1 win against fifth-place Grace Davis on Feb. 4 at CUSD Stadium.

“They for sure exceeded expectations this season,” head coach Rudy Jimenez said. “They keep getting better and better. They’ve put in the work.”

Bulldog Melanie Lopez collected one goal and one assist against the Spartans.

Sharryah Cabellos added one goal.

The Bulldogs avenged a 3-0 loss versus the Spartans.

“I had my whole team there,” Jimenez said. “Last game, I didn’t.”

Ceres High improved to 11-6-2 overall and 9-2-2 in the WAC standings after securing a 2-0 victory over third-place Beyer on Senior Night on Feb. 6.

The Bulldogs edged the Patriots 1-0 earlier this season.

“It wasn’t our best performance,” Jimenez said. “But we won. We’ll take it.”

Lopez, Madeline Diaz, Stephanie Lizola, Ava Montesdeoca, Daira Rivas, Alyssa Santillanes, Itzel Torrez and Mariah Zamora, Ceres High’s eight upperclassmen, were recognized before their final regular-season home game.

“They were a big part of the team just like last year,” Jimenez said. “They helped out a lot. They will be tough to replace. But we’re getting new players in next year.”

Cabellos and Santillanes both scored once against the Patriots.

Ceres High extended its unbeaten streak to six games last week.

The Bulldogs have accumulated five wins and one tie since losing 2-0 to the crosstown-rival Central Valley Hawks.

“They’re definitely playing better,” Jimenez said. “You can see it.”

BOYS SOCCER

Central Valley’s boys soccer team added to its league title haul this past week.

Ceres High’s struggles continued versus conference competition.

The Hawks claimed the Western Athletic Conference championship after notching wins against Lathrop and Johansen.

Newcomers to the WAC, Central Valley placed first in the Central California Conference last winter.

The Hawks have won 10 conference titles and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs 16 times in the past 17 seasons.

“It’s a big accomplishment to win a conference title,” fifth-year head coach Horacio Garcia said. “Everyone has to contribute. I thought this year was going to be a rebuilding year having 17 underclassmen on the team.”

The Hawks improved to 15-6-6 overall and 10-1-2 in the WAC standings.

Central Valley clinched the WAC championship with a 3-1 win against Lathrop on Thursday at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.

The Hawks swept the season series

Central Valley won the first meeting, 2-0, at Lathrop on Jan. 14.

The Hawks battled back from a 1-0 deficit during the second meeting.

“Once we started controlling possession of the ball, that gave us a lot more scoring opportunities,” Horacio Garcia said.

Alejandro Garcia, Diego Ochoa and Anantah Sivongxay accounted for Central Valley’s three goals.

Tahte Yang collected one assist.

Backup goalkeeper Carlo Navarro made two saves.

Central Valley shut out Johansen 3-0 on Feb. 4 in Modesto

The Hawks earned a measure of redemption as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie on Jan. 9 in Ceres.

“We were able to capitalize this time,” Horacio Garcia said.

Central Valley’s Enrique Lopez scored twice versus Johansen during the rematch.

Varsity newcomer Evan Holliday had one goal.

Yang collected two assists.

Diego Ochoa chipped in with one assist.

Osvaldo Cisneros was forced to make just one save at goalkeeper.

The Bulldogs dropped to 7-10-5 overall and 4-8-1 in the WAC standings this past week after suffering back-to-back losses.

Ceres High lost 3-2 at Beyer on Thursday.

The Bulldogs shut out the Patriots 2-0 earlier this season.

Beyer dealt Ceres High its fourth consecutive loss.

Ceres High fell 4-0 at Grace Davis on Feb. 4.

The Spartans won the first meeting, 4-1.
