Ceres High’s boys volleyball team topped Grace Davis and lost to Beyer in Western Athletic Conference play this past week.

Central Valley suffered losses while competing against Lathrop, Johansen and Beyer.

“I’m happy,” Bulldogs’ leader Kelly Heese said. “There’s been a lot of progress since the beginning of the year. We’re on track to have one of the better seasons we’ve had since I’ve been here.”

“We’ve been improving,” Hawks’ head coach Julio Madrigal stated. “We’re building our fundamental skills. We’re trying to not be predictable on offense. Players are working hard, communicating and being positive.”

Heese spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Reno coaching the Lady Sharx 16-and-under girls volleyball club team.

“We improved from the first time we played them,” Heese stated. “The scores were more competitive.”

The Spartans improved to 19-6 and 7-2.

“They have an established program,” Madrigal said. “Our kids battled. They weren’t in awe this time.

Johansen exacted revenge against Central Valley with a 3-1 win on Wednesday in Ceres.

The Hawks won the first meeting, 3-0, versus the last-place Vikings (1-7).

Central Valley lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-6) to Beyer on March 31 in Ceres.

“They’re not an easy team,” Madrigal said. “It was a good learning lesson.”
