CHS, CV athletes excel at conference championships
• Torres takes first in four events during CCC finals

Daniel Leon helped lead Central Valley’s junior-varsity boys track and field team to a third-place finish at the CCC Championships. Leon placed second in the 200 and seventh in the 110 hurdles.

Members of Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s junior-varsity track and field programs excelled in a host of events at their respective league championships earlier this month.

“It was fun to watch their confidence grow each meet,” said Bulldogs’ leader Brett Johnson.

“I’m super proud of our athletes,” Hawks’ head coach Michael Mrgudic said. “They worked very hard and were determined to be as good as possible.”

The Hawks competed at the Central California Conference finals on May 4 at Patterson Community Stadium.

Kassandra Torres, Sophia Alvarez, Valeeya Carr, Andrea Tejeda, Brianna Espinoza, Jocelyn Rivera, Jaylene Avila, Annabelle Gomez Servin, Stephanie Lopez Murillo, Ruby Medina, Rylee Randez, Angela Alvarado and Alyssa Ontiveroz led Central Valley’s girls team to first-place finish in the standings.

“Our JV girls were the champions,” Mrgudic said. “They dominated a lot of events.”

Torres placed first in the 100, 200 and 400.

The Hawks’ 4x100 relay team of Torres, Alvarez, Carr and Tejeda placed first.

“Kassandra had a great freshman year,” Mrgudic said. “To win four events (at CCC Championships) shows how strong of a runner she is. She has a bright future.”

Espinoza placed first in the discus and second in the shot put.

Tejeda placed second in the 100 and 200.

Rivera placed second in the 400.

The Hawks’ 4x400 relay team of Avila, Gomez Servin, Lopez Murillo and Medina placed second.

Randez placed second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.

Alvarez placed second in the high jump and 13th in the 100.

The Hawks’ 4x400 relay team of Tejeda, Rivera, Alvarado and Ontiveroz placed third.

The Hawks’ 4x800 relay team of Karla Sarabia, Isabella Nazario, Mia Mendoza and Janet Loza placed fourth.

The Hawks’ 4x400 relay team of Alvarez, Avila, Medina and Stephanie Lopez placed fifth.

The Hawks’ 4x100 relay team of Rivera, Lopez Murillo, Avila and Sarabia placed sixth.

The Hawks’ 4x400 relay team of Sarabia, Gomez Servin, Nazario and Mendoza placed sixth.

Alvarado placed sixth in the 800 and seventh in the 400.

Ontiveroz placed sixth in the 1,600 and ninth in the 800.

Lopez Murillo placed seventh in the 800.

Carr placed eighth in the 100 and 200.

The Hawks’ 4x100 relay team of Medina, Nazario, Gomez Servin and Mendoza placed eighth.

Courtney Crane placed ninth in the 1,600.

Medina placed 10th in the 800.

Lucero Maciel placed 16th in the shot put and 18th in the discus.

Damian Olivares, David Alvarado, Daniel Leon, Ryan Alfonso, Adam Victorino, Daniel Gonzalez, Cesar Pimentel , Frankie Klino and Massimo Catalano led Central Valley’s boys team to a third-place finish in the standings.

Olivares placed first in the shot put.

Alvarado placed first in the discus.

Central Valley’s 4x400 relay team of Leon, Alfonso, Victorino and Gonzalez placed first.

Pimentel placed first in the 100 and 200, and second in the high jump.

He tied Anthony Ramirez’s sophomore school record in the 100 this season.

“Cesar also plays baseball,” Mrgudic said. “We were just happy to have him on the team. He did well last year. This year, he took it to another level. Self-belief, talent and work ethic were all a part of his success.”

Leon placed second in the 200 and seventh in the 110 hurdles.

Klino placed third in the 1,600 and ninth in the 800.

Central Valley’s 4x100 relay team of Pimentel, Leon, Alfonso and Victorino placed third.

Catalano placed fourth in the 300 hurdles and 10th in the 110 hurdles.

Central Valley’s 4x800 relay team of Ontiveroz, Ulises Rosales, Isaac Godinez and Miguel Garrido placed fifth.

Elijah Plaseneda placed fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

Victorino placed fifth in the 200 and eighth in the 100.

Angel Franco placed fifth in the discus and 12th in the shot put.

Central Valley’s 4x100 relay team of Catalano, Gonzalez, Sebastian Maldonado and Ladainian Alvarez placed sixth.

Central Valley’s 4x400 relay team of Catalano, Maldonado, Sanchez and Rosales placed seventh.

Enoc Reyes placed seventh in the 1,600 and eighth in the 3,200.

Julian Contreras placed eighth in the discus and 11th in the shot put.

Maldonado placed 10th in the 300 hurdles and 16th in the 400.

Godinez placed 12th in the 3,200 and 16th in the 1,600.

Alvarez placed 12th in the 300 hurdles and 16th in the 100.

Daniel Lopez placed 14th in the long jump.

Gonzalez placed 17th in the 400.

Antonio Sanchez placed 19th in the 400.

Ontiveroz placed 19th in the 800.

Garrido placed 20th in the 1,600.

Alfonso placed 22nd in the 200 and 24th in the 100.

Ceres High’s boys and girls teams both finished sixth overall at the WAC finals with scores of 59 and 44, respectively, on April 27 at Johansen High School.

The top four finishers in each event were rewarded.

Jasandeep Singh, Joseluis, Arreola, Elijah Robinson, Angel Bravo, Adrian Huesca, Ivan Rodriguez, Edwin Martinez, Israel Sanchez and Andres Marcial led Ceres High’s boys team.

Singh placed first in the 110 hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles and 14th in the 400.

Ceres High’s 4x100 relay team of Arreola, Robinson, Bravo and Huesca placed second.

Robinson placed second in the high jump, seventh in the 100 and ninth in the 200.

Ceres High’s 4x800 relay team of Bravo, Rodriguez, Martinez and Sanchez placed third.

Marcial placed third in the triple jump and eighth in the 400.

Huesca placed fifth in the 200.

Sam Nieto placed fifth in the shot put.

Bravo placed fifth in the long jump and 14th in the 100.

Arreola placed fifth in the 100 and 20th in the 200.

Roy Randez placed sixth in the shot put and 12th in the discus.

Rodriguez placed seventh in the 3,200.

Angelo Estrada placed seventh in the discus.

Burris Brister placed seventh in the shot put and 11th in the discus.

Angel Neang placed eighth in the shot put.

Johnathan Palomares placed 13th in the discus.

Martinez placed 19th in the 800.

Savannah Weese, Brooke Kiser, Melina Castrejon, Aylessa Aguila and Alexia Arreola led Ceres High’s girls team.

Weese placed first in the high jump, fourth in the 100 hurdles, fifth in the triple jump and eighth in the 300 hurdles.

Kiser placed first in the 400 and seventh in the 200.

Ceres High’s 4x100 relay team of Kiser, Castrejon, Aguila and Arreola placed third.

Layla Duran placed fifth in the 1,600 and ninth in the 800.

Ceres High’s 4x400 relay team of Kiser, Aguila, Alyssa Arbaugh and Maria Bravo placed sixth.

Castrejon placed sixth in the 100 and 11th in the 200.

Arbaugh placed sixth in the 300 hurdles and 13th in the 100 hurdles.

Bravo placed seventh in the triple jump.

Aguila placed ninth in the 100 and 15th in the 200.

Jazmine Rivera placed 11th in the 800.

Arreola placed 16th in the 100.

Dania Gallo placed 18th in the 200.
