Members of Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s track and field programs competed at the Stanislaus County Championships on March 7 at Hughson High School.
Ceres High’s boys totaled 91 points on its way to a second-place finish.
Central Valley’s boys (nine points) took 13th.
Jaiden Boss, Alexander Vas Dinis, Sergio Torres, David Rodriguez-Ochoa, Julian Barrera, Kyle Phongsa, Cashton Almeida, Reis Smith, Joseluis Arreola, Nathaniel Macias, Tre Karriem, Calen Adams, McCoy Adams and Adrian Fuentes led the Bulldogs.
Boss finished first in the 110 hurdles (15.75) and 300 hurdles (40.96).
He set personal records in both events.
Vas Dinis finished first in the discus (134-61/2) and third in the shot put (43-9).
Torres finished second in the 800 (2:01.22) and 12th in the 1,600 (4:49).
Rodriguez-Ochoa finished third in the 300 hurdles (44.03) and fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.19).
Ceres High’s 4x400 relay team of Torres, Barrera, Phongsa and Almeida finished third (3:41.74).
Ceres High’s 4x100 relay team of Smith, Arreola, Macias and Karriem finished fourth (44.83).
Karriem finished fourth in the long jump (20-61/2) and sixth in the triple jump (39-81/2).
Calen Adams finished fifth in the pole vault (11-0).
Almeida finished fifth in the 400 (52.98) and eighth in the high jump (5-4).
Barrera finished seventh in the 800 (2:09).
McCoy Adams finished seventh in the pole vault (11-0).
Phongsa finished seventh in the triple jump (38-11).
Smith finished seventh in the long jump (19-81/2) and 13th in the 200 (24.38).
Fuentes finished eighth in the discus (106-11).
Ernesto Martinez, Antonio Burgos, Alexis Landa, Benjamin Gill, Diego Quintanilla, Frankie Klino and Enoc Reyes Beltran led the Hawks.
Central Valley’s 4x400 relay team of Martinez, Burgos, Landa and Gill finished fourth (3:49.61).
Central Valley’s 4x800 relay team of Landa, Quintanilla, Klino and Reyes Beltran finished fifth (9:34.95).
Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s girls placed 12th and 14th, respectively, in the team standings.
The Bulldogs totaled 15 and eight points.
Jayden Garcia, Mariah Zamora, Alanize Moreno, Alexa Romo and Arrayah Stallworth led Ceres High.
Garcia finished fourth in the 400 (1:04.04), seventh in the triple jump (31-11/2), 11th in the 100 hurdles (18.90) and 14th in the 300 hurdles (56.72).
Zamora finished fourth in the triple jump (32-0), 13th in the long jump (14-21/2) and 22nd in the 200 (30.52).
Moreno finished sixth in the discus (80-7) and ninth in the shot put (25-8).
Mia Muniz, Alyssa Ontiveroz, Angela Alvarado, Tarnjot Kaur, Lilyanna Madrigal, Eliana Tamayo, Andrea Tejeda, Aaralyn Jauregui, Kassandra Torres and Ayleen Apreza led the Hawks.
Central Valley’s 4x800 relay team of Muniz, Ontiveroz, Alvarado and Kaur finished fourth (12:19.13).
Madrigal finished seventh in the shot put (27-2) and ninth in the discus (71-11).
Central Valley’s 4x400 relay team of Tamayo, Tejeda, Torres and Aaralyn Jauregui finished eighth (4:38.11).
BASEBALL
Central Valley’s and Ceres High’s baseball teams remained in a first-place tie atop the Western Athletic Conference standings after sweeping Beyer and Lathrop, respectively, this past week.
“We did what we were expected to do,” Central Valley head coach Brad Bussard said.
“We’re having a lot of people contribute,” Ceres High leader Bret Durossette stated.
The Hawks collected 19 hits and 12 runs during their two-game series versus the Patriots.
Central Valley won the first game, 3-1, against Beyer on March 18 in Ceres.
Hawk pitcher Chris Garcia had a program-record 16 strikeouts.
He gave up just one hit in six innings.
“It’s always fun to see a school record broke,” Bussard stated. “Chris has a real special combination of talent and baseball savviness.”
Central Valley totaled eight hits on offense.
Caden Mendonca batted 2-for-3 with one double and one run.
Mason Whitworth batted 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI and one run.
The Hawks improved to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the WAC following their 9-2 win over Beyer on March 20 in Modesto.
Central Valley pitcher Nicholas Dominguez totaled eight strikeouts and three walks in five innings.
He gave up no earned runs and three hits.
The Hawks scored nine runs on 11 hits, nine walks and three errors.
Isaias Valdovinos batted 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Whitworth batted 2-for-3 with two runs.
Adrian Vega batted 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
The Bulldogs totaled 22 hits and 28 runs during their two-game series versus the Spartans.
Ceres High improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in league play after besting host Lathrop 16-0 in five innings on March 20. The Spartans dropped to 4-8 and 2-2.
“These kids have surprised me a lot,” Durossette said. “I thought it was going to be a rebuilding year.”
Bulldog pitcher Ashton Urena totaled four strikeouts and no walks in 41/3 innings.
He allowed no runs and four hits.
Ceres High collected 17 hits.
Vincent Castrejon batted 3-for-3 from the plate with one triple, two RBIs and two runs.
Urena batted 3-for-3 with one double, three RBIs and one run.
Carson Ulrich batted 2-for-4 with one triple, one double, one RBI and three runs.
Ceres High defeated visiting Lathrop 12-0 in six innings on March 18 at Art McRae Field.
Castrejon pitched a complete game. He surrendered no runs and four hits with six strikeouts and one walk in six hits.
Castrejon batted 1-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs.
Junior Sombrerero batted 2-for-3 with one double, three RBIs and one run.
Ulrich batted 0-for-2 with three RBIs and one run.
SOFTBALL
Ceres High’s softball team earned conference wins against Pacheco and Lathrop last week.
Central Valley dropped league games to Livingston and Beyer.
The Bulldogs improved to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference standings after routing visiting Pacheco 12-2 in five innings on Friday.
Elizabeth Figueroa was the winning pitcher. She yielded one earned run and five hits with two strikeouts and no walks in five innings.
Figueroa also helped her own cause by batting 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs and two runs.
Kylie Bond batted 1-for-3 with one double, three RBIs and one run.
Gabriela Ortiz batted 1-for-1 with three runs.
Ceres High cruised to a 13-3, six-inning mercy-rule victory versus host Lathrop on Wednesday.
Alcarez was the winning pitcher. She allowed two earned runs and six hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in six innings.
The Bulldogs scored 13 runs on 14 hits, three walks and six errors.
Ava Montesdeoca batted 4-for-4 with one triple, four RBIs and three runs.
Gabriela Ortiz batted 1-for-5 with one double and three RBIs.
Figueroa batted 2-for-4 with two runs.
Central Valley dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the WAC after losing 7-3 at Livingston on Friday.
“I thought we played really well,” Hawks’ leader Jimmy Bates said. “We competed all game long.”
Reylena Herrera led Central Valley’s offense.
She batted 1-for-4 with one triple and two RBIs.
Alicia Espinoza batted 2-for-4 with two doubles and one run.
Brooklynn Steeley batted 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Gabriela Delatorre batted 1-for-4 with one run.
