Elizabeth Boyd and Dayanna Alvarez etched their names in the record books by becoming the first female wrestlers from Ceres High School to medal at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships.
Boyd and Alvarez both finished in the top eight in their respective weight brackets this past week at Adventist Health Arena in Stockton.
“They made history,” Bulldogs’ head coach Curtis Hulstine said. “It’s amazing.”
Boyd placed sixth with a 4-3 record in the 170-pound division.
She fell one victory shy of becoming Ceres High’s first-ever state-qualifier.
“It’s the best I’ve seen her wrestle,” Hulstine said. “We saw a different side of her. She was laser-focused. She was more aggressive.”
Boyd lost by pin (2:26) to Escalon’s Helena Arroyo during the fifth-place match.
“She was winning,” Hulstine said. “She was about to put the girl on her back, and in the process, she got rolled and pinned. It was a wild exchange.”
Boyd collected wins against Rodriguez’s Mayra Roman (pin, 2:56), Marysville’s Eliza Sumait pin, 3:11), Del Oro’s Lauren Madden (pin, 4:11) and Pacheco’s Melaya Soto (decision, 7-0).
She was beaten by Tokay’s Kayleen Tuavao (pin, 0:17) and Rio Vista’s Chloe Goddard (pin, 2:13).
Alvarez placed seventh at 145 pounds.
She compiled a 4-2 record.
“She had a great tournament as well,” Hulstine said.
Alvarez collected wins against Calaveras (forfeit), Livingston’s Kiranpreet Bains (decision, 5-0), Pacheco’s Jayna Arrocena (sudden victory, 4-1) and Waterford’s Serenity Dalton (decision, 7-2).
She lost to Liberty Ranch’s Veronika Shayhen (pin, 3:54) and Placer’s Sora Lasko (decision, 6-1).
“It was awesome to see Dayanna battle back and get on the podium,” Hulstine said. “She’s dealt with a lot of injuries this year.”
Ceres High teammates Abigail Schultz and Mezmeriah Zuniga competed at Masters for the first time.
Schultz compiled an 0-2 record at 130 pounds.
She lost to Lincoln of Stockton’s Evelynn Thea (decision, 10-4) and Hilmar’s Nora Jorge (technical fall, 18-1).
Zuniga compiled an 0-2 record at 135 pounds.
She lost to Ponderosa’s Paige Fletcher (pin, 1:33) and Tokay’s Dulce Evaristo (pin, 4:24).
“Having two freshmen qualify for Masters is a huge accomplishment,” Hulstine said. “They’re both quick learners and good athletes. They love the sport and work hard.”
