Ceres High’s girls flag football team has been a roll since suffering its second loss of the season on Aug. 29.

Central Valley continues to show improvement.

The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to nine games last week.

Ceres High remained in first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings after besting Pacheco and Mariposa by a combined score of 88-12.

“I’m not surprised with how well we’ve been doing,” Bulldogs’ standout quarterback/defensive back Marissa Renteria said. “We’ve been putting in the work at practice. We take it serious. Our whole team gets along. We motivate each other every day.”

Ceres High improved to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in WAC play during its inaugural season of girls flag football.

“It’s a big surprise,” Bulldogs’ head coach Curtis Hulstine said. “I didn’t know how this was going to go. It’s been a fun ride. It’s going to continue until the end of the season.”

Ceres High has put itself in the driver’s seat in the race for the WAC championship. 

The Bulldogs’ final three opponents are Los Banos, Orestimba and Mountain House.

“We’re very excited to be in a position to take first in league,” Renteria aid. “We’re motivated. Being able to do something we all have a passion for is fun and exciting.”

“The girls want it,” Hulstine said while talking about Ceres High’s WAC-title hopes.

Ceres High routed Pacheco 42-12 on Thursday in Los Banos.

Renteria accounted for 430 yards and six touchdowns on offense.

She passed for 288 yards and four TDs. She rushed for 142 yards and two scores.

Renteria also intercepted two passes on defense.

Savannah Leifried, Nehemiah Valenzuela, Maddie Schultz and Hailey Tsurui all had one receiving touchdown.

Alyssa Santillanes had 98 receiving yards.

Ceres High blanked Mariposa 46-0 on Wednesday at CUSD Stadium.

Renteria accounted for 338 yards and seven touchdowns on offense.

She ran for 189 yards and four scores. She threw for 149 yards and three TDs.

Renteria had five interceptions on defense.

Mariah Renteria had 67 yards and two touchdowns at receiver.

Tsurui caught one TD pass.

“We got a good group of girls that really enjoy playing together,” Hulstine said. “Win or lose, they’re having a good time.”

Ceres High will play host second-place Los Banos (6-5, 3-1) on Senior Night this evening at CUSD Stadium.

Kickoff slated for 6 p.m.

Central Valley dropped to 2-17 overall and 1-9 in the Central California Conference standings last week.

The Hawks were beaten by the Livingston Wolves and Atwater Falcons.

Central Valley lost 13-0 to second-place Livingston Thursday evening in Ceres.

Alexa Cadenas threw for 66 yards while completing eight passes.

She had three tackles and one pass deflection on defense.

Kalli Hoffman caught three passes for 17 yards and rushed for 5 yards on one carry.

She had two tackles.

Vanessa Perez (20 yards), Tori Molina (15 yards) and Dulce Del Valle (10 yards) all had one reception.

Rylee Randez made a team-high eight tackles.

Tarnjot Kaur made seven tackles.

Alicia Espinoza had six tackles.

Itzel Romero had one sack. 

Central Valley lost 30-18 at second-place Atwater on Oct. 3.

Cadenas passed for 115 yards and three touchdowns.

She rushed for 38 yards on three carries.

Cadenas totaled five tackles.

Valeria Garcia caught two passes for 35 yards and one touchdown.

Emma Garcia caught two passes for 30 yards and one TD.

Brianna Espinoza caught one pass for 20 yards and one score.

Hoffman ran for 111 yards on seven carries.

WATER POLO

Ceres High’s water polo program competed against Beyer on Oct. 5 in Modesto.

Ceres High’s youth-laden boys team dropped to 0-7 in the WAC following its 17-1 loss to the first-place Patriots.

“Our team record isn’t the greatest when it comes to the amount of wins but that doesn’t mean they aren’t improving,” first-year head coach Angelique Huerta said.

Goalkeeper Jesus Valdovinos totaled nine saves for the last-place Bulldogs.

Eli Farinha accounted for Ceres High’s lone goal.

Ceres High’s girls team dropped to 4-5 in the WAC after losing 13-7 to the Patriots.

Kaylie Clindaniel and Isla Hore led the third-place Bulldogs in scoring with two goals apiece. Lilly Blevins, Amber Hopwood and Haley Gaskill all scored once.

Arleth Sanchez made 12 saves.


CROSS COUNTRY

The members of Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s cross country programs raced at cluster meets in recent weeks.

The Bulldogs competed at the WAC’s second cluster meet on Sept. 27 at River Islands Fields in Lathrop.

Ceres High’s girls placed fourth in the team standings.

The Bulldogs totaled 106 points while finishing ahead of Lathrop (108).

Jaden Stahl led Ceres High.

She posted a time of 24 minutes, 23 seconds en route to a ninth-place finish on the 3.1-mile course.

Bulldog teammates Brianna Luna (25:52), Stephanie Espinoza (26:48), Samira Mendoza (34:09), Melina Aguirre (35:17) and Destiny Pena (37:57) placed 19th, 21st, 44th, 46th and 47th, respectively.

Ceres High’s boys placed last in the team standings.

The Bulldogs totaled 211 points.

Sergio Torres led Ceres High. He posted a time of 20 minutes en route to a 29th-place finish on the 3.1-mile course.

Bulldog teammates Aaron Lopez (20:05), Martin Bolanos Aleman (22:24), Emanuel Barajas (22:31), Kevin Pena (23:23), Abraham Rodriguez (23:24) and Daniel Plantillas (23:24) placed 31st, 57th, 59th, 68th, 69th and 70th, respectively. 

The Hawks competed at the CCC’s second cluster meet on Oct. 3 at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.

Central Valley’s boys placed sixth in the team standings.

The Hawks totaled 160 points while finishing ahead of El Capitan (206).

Alexis Landa led Central Valley.

He posted a time of 18 minutes, 53 seconds en route to a 23rd-place finish on the 3.1-mile course.

Hawk teammates Kevin Garcia (19:41), Cesar Hernandez (19:51), Frankie Klino (20:07), LaDre Sengsoury (20:54), Jackson Stokes (22:25), Joshua Michelena (23:13) and Jadin Navarro (24:08) placed 32nd, 33rd, 35th, 45th, 49th, 51st and 52nd, respectively.


GIRLS GOLF

Ceres High’s girls golf team dropped a pair of conference matches last week.

The Bulldogs fell to 4-8 in the Western Athletic Conference standings after being beaten by Lathrop and Los Banos on Oct. 3 at St. Stanislaus.

Fifth-place Ceres High lost 251-264 to third-place Los Banos and 235-264 to fourth-place Lathrop.

Allison Lewis led the Bulldogs with a 44. 

Brooke Trio and Kyleigh Robinson shot 45 and 51, respectively.

Makelle Selby and Brooke Kiser rounded out Ceres High’s scorecard with identical rounds of 62.
