Ceres High’s girls golf team exceeded head coach Ron Edwards’ expectations during the Western Athletic Conference season.

The new-look Bulldogs finished second in the WAC’s overall standings with 40 points.

Livingston (49) claimed the team title.

Lathrop (35), Pacheco (15), Beyer (7), Central Valley (4), Grace Davis (1) and Johansen (0) placed third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

“To finish second, it was very unexpected,” Bulldogs’ head coach Ron Edwards said. “You talk about surprises. I only had three returners and four girls that have never played golf in their lives.”

The conference’s eight teams earned points for how they performed during the WAC Championships, Midseason Tournament and dual season.

Ceres High took second at the WAC Championships and Midseason Tournament.

Allison Lewis and Brooke Trio led the Bulldogs with identical rounds of 119 at the WAC Championships on Oct. 22 at Rancho Del Rey Golf Club in Atwater.

Ceres High teammates Abelinah Sanchez, Tiffany Rios, Megan Sather and Jadasa Haro shot 123, 126, 157 and 162 respectively.

The Bulldogs amassed a 10-4 record while tying for second place with Lathrop during the WAC dual season.

Ceres High topped crosstown-rival Central Valley, 184-190, on Sept. 24 and won by forfeit on Oct. 21 at St. Stanislaus.

The Bulldogs edged the Hawks by just six strokes during the first meeting.

“Central Valley had a good team,” Edwards said. “I’m not going to deny that. It was close. It came down to the last player.”

The Bulldog competed with a revamped roster this year as Lewis (Sr.), Trio (Sr.) and Makelle Selby (Jr.) returned to the team.

Sather (Sr.), Rios (Sr.), Haro (Jr.) and Abelinah Sanchez (So.) played organized golf for the first time.

“All they wanted to do was get better,” Edwards said. “And they all did.”

Lewis, Trio, Sather and Rios will graduate this June.

“I’m going to lose good players,” Edwards said.

Selby, Haro and Sanchez gained valuable playing experience this year.

“They could be pretty good next year if they put a little more practice in,” Edwards said.
