Allison Lewis, Brooke Trio, Tiffany Rios, Abelinah Sanchez and Makelle Selby helped lead Ceres High’s girls golf team to a second-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference’s overall standings.

Lewis, Trio, Rios, Sanchez and Selby were recognized for their individual play as the five starters earned WAC honors this fall, along with Central Valley standouts Elia Hernandez, Kali Bernal and Emily Mariani.

“It’s strictly based on performance,” Hawks’ head coach Kelly Wheelock said. “They deserved it. They worked hard. They met my expectations. Kudos to them.”

“I was surprised,” Bulldogs’ leader Ron Edwards said. “I didn’t select them. They made it by their scoring averages they had for the year.”

Lewis, a senior, and Hernandez, a junior, were both selected to the WAC First Team.

They ranked in the top six in scoring average in league play.

Lewis led the Bulldogs with a 119 at the conference’s year-end tournament on Oct. 22 at Rancho Del Rey Golf Club in Atwater.

Lewis was a four-time Divisional qualifier.

“Every year, she got better,” Edwards said. “She had a lot of good scores this season.”

Hernandez led the Hawks with a 105 at the league championships.

She qualified for Divisionals for the first time.

“I’m not surprised by it (her performance),” Wheelock said. “She decided to take the sport serious as much as she could. She put in the work. She played over the summer at Rancho Del Rey. Her swing improved.”

Trio and Bernal were named to the WAC Second Team.

They finished in the top 12 in the conference’s individual standings.

Trio, a senior, fired a team-best 119 at the league championships.

She was a four-time Divisional qualifier.

“Brooke played well,” Edwards said. “I would have loved to see her get First Team, along with Allison. They were my two, most consistent golfers. Without them, our scores would have been a lot higher than what they were. They saved us a lot of strokes. But don’t get me wrong. Everybody did their part on the team this year.”

Bernal, a senior, carded a 123.

She competed at Divisionals for the second year in a row.

Bernal never missed a match.

“Each year, she continuously got better,” Wheelock said. “She put in the work. She practiced on her own. That’s why she was successful.”

Rios (Sr.), Selby (Jr.), Sanchez (So.) and Mariani (Jr.) garnered honorable-mention recognition.

Mariani carded a team-best 105 at the conference’s year-end tournament.

She advanced to Divisionals for the first time.

“If Emily didn’t miss a couple matches, she could have been a first-team all-league (selection),” Wheelock said. “She improved a lot.”

Sanchez and Rios shot 123 and 126, respectively, at the WAC Championships.

Ceres High and Central Valley finished second and sixth, respectively, in the WAC’s overall standings.
