Central Valley’s boys tennis team compiled a 2-3 record during the first half of the Western Athletic Conference season.
“We are young,” Hawks’ head coach Nimrat Chahal said. “We just have three seniors on our roster. The rest of our players are mainly juniors and sophomores. The kids are definitely getting better. They’re hitting the ball cleaner. They’re growing their confidence.”
Fourth-place Central Valley closed out the opening half of WAC play with a 6-3 loss to first-place Lathrop on March 19 in Manteca.
“We had a chance to win,” Chahal said. “We just didn’t pull it out.”
The Hawks won all three doubles matches versus the Spartans.
Darien Pongbandith and Roman Parodi prevailed 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in No. 1 doubles play.
Blake Silva and Manny Carranza prevailed 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles play.
Rehman Ali and Leo Navarro prevailed 6-1, 6-3 in No. 3 doubles play.
“Our doubles are pretty solid this year,” Chahal said. “We have players that are aggressive and putting the ball away at the net.”
Central Valley dropped all six singles matches to Lathrop. Three of the matches were competitive.
Silas Rodriguez lost 6-4, 6-4 in No. 4 singles play.
Alexander Aguilar lost 6-4, 7-5 in No. 5 singles play.
Jaylan Tagadaya lost 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 in No. 6 singles play.
“Silas, Alex and Jaylan could have won,” Chahal said. “They were up in both sets at one point.”
Anantah Sivongxay lost 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles play.
Israel Guajardo lost 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles play.
Avori Ortega lost 6-4, 6-1 in No. 3 singles play.
The Hawks beat Johansen and Livingston during the first half of the WAC season.
Central Valley lost to Lathrop, Grace Davis and Beyer.
The Hawks experienced their last winning season in 2022.
Central Valley posted an 8-4 record while finishing in third place in the Central California Conference.
The Hawks returned to the playoffs following a six-year absence.
“If we can beat Davis, we might have a good chance at finishing in the top three this year,” Chahal said.
