Central Valley’s boys soccer team won back-to-back games versus Central California Conference competition this past week.
“I’m very happy with how everybody has been performing,” head coach Horatio Garcia said. “We’ve been working really hard to compete for the conference title for several years.”
The Hawks improved to 14-6-1 overall and remained in second place in the Central California Conference standings with a 5-1 record after earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Patterson on Thursday at Patterson Community Stadium.
Central Valley’s Yahir Perez collected one goal and one assist versus the Tigers.
Alexis Cervantes scored once.
Miguel Serrano tallied one assist.
Damyan Garcia and Jesus Silva both contributed at goalkeeper.
Garcia totaled five saves during the second half.
Silva made four saves in the first half.
Cervantes scored the game-winning goal on a counterattack off a pass from Perez with five minutes remaining in the contest.
Central Valley shut out Merced 3-0 on Jan. 9 in Ceres.
“Everybody got playing time,” coach Garcia said.
Alexis Cervantes scored a team-high two goals.
Andres Guevara chipped in with one goal.
Ivan Cervantes, Julio Larranaga and Ivan Velasquez all collected one assist.
Dominic Gudino made two saves in place of Silva, who was on vacation in Mexico.
Gudino was promoted from Central Valley’s junior-varsity team.
Dawgs tie, lose
Ceres High’s boys soccer team battled to a draw and suffered a loss in Western Athletic Conference play last week.
The Bulldogs dropped to 4-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the WAC standings after falling 1-0 to Los Banos on Jan. 10 at CUSD Stadium.
Ceres High had to settle for a 0-0 tie while battling host Mountain House on Jan. 8.
GIRLS SOCCER
Central Valley’s girls soccer team improved to 8-8-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Central California Conference standings after tying Patterson and shutting out Merced last week.
Central Valley and Patterson battled to a 0-0 tie on Thursday in Ceres.
“When you play at home, and have a chance to win the game, you have to take advantage,” head coach Miguel Larranaga said.
Hawk freshman striker Aaralyn Jauregui just missed scoring a goal in the opening half. She fired a shot off the crossbar.
Central Valley junior goalkeeper Magnolia Tavison made a pair of one-on-one saves to preserve shutout.
Central Valley blanked host Merced 3-0 on Jan. 9.
“We played good enough to get the win,” Larranaga said.
Jauregui accounted for all three of the Hawks’ goals.
Central Valley teammates Viviana Flores and Jocelyn Rivera both had one assist.
Tavison totaled nine saves.
CHS secures split
Ceres High’s girls soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory against visiting Mountain House on Friday at CUSD Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
Ceres High fell 6-0 at Los Banos on Jan. 10.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Ceres High’s boys basketball team improved to 12-6 overall and 5-0 in the Western Athletic Conference after winning three games in a five-day span this past week.
“We’re blessed to be in this position,” Bulldogs’ head coach T.J. Walker Jr. said. “The guys are believing in themselves and the system.”
Ceres High extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 68-58 victory over host Los Banos on Jan. 12.
Manuel Ortega led the Bulldogs with 21 points, seven rebounds and one assist.
AJ Brown added 17 points, five rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.
Myles Vath had 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Gilbert Nuno had 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Carey Mastin had seven points, two assists and one rebound.
Ceres High edged visiting Johansen 62-58 on Jan. 10 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.
Ortega led the Bulldogs with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Nuno had 14 points and six rebounds.
Brown had 12 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist.
Mastin had 11 points, eight assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Ceres High defeated visiting Pacheco 69-57 on Jan. 8.
Ortega led the Bulldogs with 28 points and 13 rebounds.
Nuno had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Brown had 12 points.
Hawks prevail
Central Valley’s boys basketball team is no longer winless in league play.
The Hawks improved to 5-14 overall and 1-3 in the Central California Conference standings with a 73-60 victory against the visiting Buhach Colony Thunder on Dec. 12 in Ceres.
Robbie Singh led Central Valley with 17 points and two rebounds.
Sahibjot Deal had 13 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and one assist.
Andre Flores had 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Central Valley sustained a 68-36 loss at Atwater on Jan. 10.
Central Valley lost 75-46 to visiting Merced on Jan. 8.
Singh led the Hawks with 13 points and three rebounds.
Andre Flores had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Deal had seven points and two rebounds.

Central Valley lost 62-17 to visiting Patterson in Central California Conference play on Saturday.
Buhach Colony edged Central Valley 47-46 on Jan. 11 in Atwater.
Atwater defeated Central Valley 81-21 on Jan. 9 in Ceres.
Central Valley suffered a 50-12 loss at Merced on Jan. 8.
The Hawks dropped to 2-15 overall and 0-3 in the CCC.
Dawgs bounce back
Ceres High’s girls basketball team has reeled off three straight wins since opening Western Athletic Conference play with a five-point loss at Lathrop.
The Bulldogs improved to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the WAC standings with a 32-29 win over Johansen on Thursday in Modesto.
Marissa Renteria led Ceres High with 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and one assist.
Arrayah Stallworth added seven points, 17 rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
Jolissa Guillory had seven points and one assist.
Ceres High routed Pacheco 51-38 on Jan. 9 in Los Banos.
Marissa Renteria led the Bulldogs with 17 points, 10 steals, six rebounds, four assists and one block.
Sovannary Carter added 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
