A host of grapplers from Central Valley’s and Ceres High’s boys wrestling programs extended their seasons this past week.

Central Valley’s Angel Melgoza, Carlos Zepeda, Zachary Esparza, Sunny Breshears, Caleb Beckhart, Sal Almazan, David Alvarado, Sean Vernon, Anthony Diaz, Jayden Mattox, Emilio Castillo, Isaac Davalos and Rotceh Mendez, and Ceres High’s Jaime Torres, Parker Borges, McCoy Adams, Calen Adams and James Roark secured individual berths to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Tournament after finishing in the top four in their respective weight brackets at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Livingston High School.

The Hawks and Bulldogs finished first and eighth, respectively, in the WAC team standings.

“Everybody that wrestled for us made it (to Divisionals),” Central Valley head coach Rob Beckhart said. “They showed that they’re a good team. I’m proud of them for the effort and staying focused.”

“I’m proud of the kids that qualified,” Ceres High leader Adam Borges said. “We didn’t wrestle our best. We still got a lot of work to do.”

The Hawks will be sending their entire 13-person lineup to Divisionals.

Melgoza claimed the 217-pound title at the WAC finals. He posted a 3-0 record.

Melgoza beat Beyer (forfeit), Grace Davis’ Miguel Olvera De Anda (pin, 2:14) and Lathrop’s Casyn Hopping (pin, 4:00).

“I’m happy for Angel to be able to accomplish that,” Rob Beckhart said while talking about Melgoza’s title-clinching performance. “He’s a good leader. He’s got a great attitude. He works hard every day.”

Zepeda captured the 177-pound championship. He posted a 3-0 record.

Zepeda beat Ceres High’s Abraham Rodriguez (pin, 2:27), Livingston’s Fabian Cornejo (sudden victory, 13-10) and Beyer’s Rowen Carmack (pin, 5:07).

“There were some tough kids in his bracket,” coach Beckhart said. “He had to beat a couple kids he lost to before. I do think he surprised himself. He finally got an opportunity to be a part of the varsity lineup and he’s taken advantage of it. He’s wrestling well.”

Esparza took second at 167 pounds. He posted a 2-1 record. He beat Pacheco (forfeit) and Beyer’s Nathaniel Montez (pin, 0:30).

Breshears took second at 146 pounds. He posted a 2-1 record. He beat Johansen’s Atticus Nicholas (decision, 7-4) and Ceres High’s Parker Borges (decision, 11-7).

Beckhart took second at 140 pounds. He posted a 2-1 record. He beat Pacheco’s Christian Verduzo (technical fall, 21-6) and Beyer’s Adrian Revera (pin, 0:52).

Almazan took third at 287 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He beat Grace Davis (forfeit), Livingston’s David Ornelas (pin, 1:46) and Lathrop’s Edward Nelson (pin, 2:26).

Alvarado took third at 192 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He collected a pair of wins against Livingston’s Angel Pina.

Alvarado prevailed by technical fall (16-1) and pin (2:11). He also bested Lathrop’s Rueben Lopez (technical fall, 17-0). 

Vernon took third at 159 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He beat Pacheco’s Reynaldo Rivas (pin, 4:31), Grace Davis’ Sherman August (decision, 7-1) and Livingston’s Angel Reyes (decision, 13-7).

Diaz took third at 152 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He beat collected a pair of wins against Beyer’s Aiden Ortegon.

Diaz prevailed by technical fall (15-0) and sudden victory (3-0). He also bested Livingston’s Bryan Ruiz (technical fall, 15-0).

Mattox took third at 128 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He beat Beyer’s Preston Walden (pin, 5:06), Pacheco’s Christian Bravo (pin, 2:37) and Lathrop’s Andrew Chunn (decision, 5-2).

Castillo took third at 122 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He beat Lathrop’s Zachary Soares (technical fall, 20-3), Beyer’s Aiden Brower (decision, 12-5) and Ceres High’s McCoy Adams (decision, 3-0).

Davalos took third at 115 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He beat Johansen’s Fernando Silveira (technical fall, 17-1), Ceres High’s Calen Adams (decision, 9-8) and Grace Davis’ Matthew Ratteree (sudden victory, 6-3).

Mendez took fourth at 134 pounds. He posted a 3-2 record. He collected a pair of wins against Pacheco’s Aaron Mendez. He prevailed by pin (3:11) and no contest.

Mendez also bested Livingston’s Juan Avalos (major decision, 15-3).

Ceres High had five grapplers advance to Divisionals.

Torres took second at 192 pound at the WAC Championships. He posted a 2-1 record. He beat Johansen (forfeit) and Pacheco’s Magdaleno Barrera (pin, 3:07).

“Jaime has been pretty consistent most of the year,” said coach Borges. “He’s a hard-working kid. He wrestles tough. When he puts his mind to something, he achieves it.”

Borges took third at 146 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record. He beat Beyer’s Jayden Self (pin, 1:06), Lathrop’s Sebastian Amaya (pin, 1:30) and Johansen’s Atticus Nicholas (pin, 0:14).

“He wrestled well after his loss,” Adam Borges said.

McCoy Adams took fourth at 122 pounds. He posted a 3-2 record. He collected a pair of wins against Beyer’s Aiden Brower.

Adams prevailed by decision (11-6) and no contest. He also bested Lathrop’s Zachary Soares (pin, 1:35).

Calen Adams took fourth at 115 pounds. He posted a 3-2 record. He beat Beyer’s Christopher Billon (pin, 0:18), Pacheco’s Benjamin Bojorquez (technical fall, 17-0) and Grace Davis’ Matthew Ratteree (pin, 2:03).

Roark took fourth at 108 pounds. He posted a 2-2 record. He collected a pair of wins against Johansen’s Laron Mitchell.

Hawk and Bulldogs grappler will compete at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Championships this Saturday at Johnson High School in Sacramento.
