Central Valley’s boys wrestling team didn’t disappoint while competing in front of its home fans this past month.
The Hawks totaled 175 points en route to a third-place showing at the 58th Ceres Invitational on Dec. 21 at Ceres High School.
The host Bulldogs (103) took seventh.
The Pitman Pride (271.5) captured the team title.
The Patterson Tigers (176.5) finished second.
“I’m happy for our boys,” Central Valley head coach Rob Beckhart said. “This is a tough sport. We’re hard on them. It’s good to see them get some recognition. It really helps boost their confidence. I just want all of our kids to keep getting better. This is all practice.”
“There were over 20 teams there,” Ceres High leader Adam Borges stated. “Our goal was to finish in the top 10. We’re moving in the right direction.”
The Hawks and Bulldogs won a combined 14 individual medals.
The top six individuals in each weight division were rewarded.
“We have some really good wrestlers,” Beckhart stated.
The Bulldogs had five grapplers medal at their home tournament, including Parker Borges, Hunter Hammons, Jaime Torres, McCoy Adams and Alijah Jackson.
Borges was presented a championship ring after taking first in the 144-pound bracket.
He was also named the tournament’s most outstanding lightweight wrestler.
“It was awesome to see him achieve that goal,” coach Borges said.
Borges compiled a 3-0 record.
He topped Venture Academy’s Tanner Gantt (pin, 0:40), Enochs’ Eden Chen (pin, 1:55) and Davis’ Jeremiah Sanchez (pin).
Borges has medaled at three tournaments this season, including the Ceres Invitational, James Riddle Classic and Bulldog Classic.
“He’s starting to put everything together,” Adam Borges said.
Hammons placed fourth with a 4-2 record at 285 pounds.
He topped Edison Senior’s Jonathon Corralejo (pin, 3:06), Davis’ Alex Ram (pin, 2:08), Santa Teresa’s Aleczander Matthew (pin, 0:57) and Patterson’s Randy White (pin, 2:51).
Hammons earned his first varsity medal.
“Hunter kind of surprised me,” coach Borges said. “It’s one of the better tournament (performances) I’ve seen from him in the last three years. It’s a good confidence boost for him.”
Torres placed fourth with a 2-2 record at 190 pounds.
He topped Pitman’s Jesiah Vasquez (pin, 0:49) and Manteca’s Miguel Cocio (pin, 1:57).
“Jaime’s been working hard at practice,” Adam Borges said. “He was determined to win.”
Adams placed fifth with a 3-2 record at 120 pounds.
He topped Enochs’ Zia Martinez (pin, 3:06), Hayward’s Adrian Buttram ((pin, 1:46) and Stagg’s Jesus Atondo (pin, 1:42).
“Overall, he did well,” coach Borges said.
Jackson placed sixth with a 1-3 record at 106 pounds.
He topped Manteca’s Madden Rattanasack (decision, 13-11).
“He’s getting better each tournament,” Adam Borges said.
The Hawks had nine medalists, including Sunny Breshears, Salvador Almazan, Angel Melgoza, Carlos Zepeda, Anthony Diaz, Rotceh Mendez, Caleb Beckart, Isaac Davalos and Sean Vernon.
Breshears placed second with a 3-1 record in the 150-pound weight bracket.
He beat Enochs’ Rafael Virgen Gonzalez (pin, 2:57), Manteca’s Rudra Singh (pin, 4:22) and Stagg’s Leron Bursey (pin, 1:45).
“Moving forward, that’s a pretty big confidence booster for him,” coach Beckhart said.
Almazan placed third with a 5-1 record at 285 pounds.
He beat Franklin’s Kenyiro Lara (technical fall, 18-1), Hayward’s Malcolm Senegal (pin, 0:34), Edison Senior’s Jonathon Corralejo (pin, 4:03), Big Valley Christian’s Andrew Coonfield (pin, 2:01) and Ceres High’s Hunter Hammons (pin, 1:53).
“Sal’s wrestling has gotten a lot better over the last year,” Rob Beckhart said.
Melgoza placed third with a 3-1 record at 215 pounds.
He beat Modesto High’s Melea Uili (pin, 0:12), Riverbank’s Gabriel Sandoval (pin, 0:47) and East Union’s Issac Alvarez (pin, 2:29).
“Angel is a stud,” coach Beckhart said. “He’s ranked in the state. He always goes out and gives his best effort.”
Zepeda placed third with a 3-1 record at 175 pounds.
He beat Davis’ John Castro (pin, 2:19), Venture Academy’s Alex Castilleva (pin, 1:29) and Patterson’s Daniel Estrada (pin, 2:46).
Diaz placed fourth with a 4-2 record at 157 pounds.
He beat Hayward’s Isaiah Cain Jr. (pin, 3:28), Santa Teresa’s Jose Vargas Cardona (pin, 4:14), Big Valley Christian’s Ezra Stubbert (pin, 4:20) and Manteca’s Dennen Loureiro (pin, 2:55).
Mendez placed fourth with a 4-2 record at 132 pounds.
He beat Modesto High’s Rhonen Saldana (technical fall, 20-4), Venture Academy’s Nathaniel Barrios (technical fall, 19-3), Santa Teresa’s Nickolas Castrillo (pin, 3:39) and East Union’s Julian Perez (forfeit).
Beckhart placed fifth with a 5-1 record at 138 pounds.
He beat East Union’s Roman Salcido (decision, 12-5), Riverbank’s Adrian Jimenez (technical fall, 17-0), Enochs’ Ulisses Garcia (pin, 4:03), Beyer’s Adrian Revera (pin, 1:58) and East Union’s Tyler Bogle (pin, 2:28).
Davalos took fifth with a 3-2 record at 113 pounds.
He beat Davis’ Mohammad Faizi (pin, 3:39), Ceres High’s Michael King (decision, 9-5) and Enochs’ Dominic Hejnal (major decision, 15-2).
Vernon placed sixth with a 3-3 record at 165 pounds.
He beat Hayward’s Alan Tadesse (pin, 3:44), Stagg’s Leif Helland (pin, 1:58) and Big Valley Christian’s Alejandro Rendon (pin, 3:56).
Ceres High’s Daniel Tubera, Michael King, Abraham Rodriguez, Ivan Martinez, Adamir Jimenez and Joao Honorio, and Central Valley’s Emilio Castillo, Julian Gonzalez, Breighdon and Jayden Mattox gained valuable mat time while competing at the Ceres Invitational.
Tubera compiled a 2-2 record at 138 pounds.
He topped Hayward’s Evin Griggs (pin, 0:37) and Chavez’s Ty’ree Williams (pin, 0:37).
King compiled a 1-2 record at 113 pounds.
He topped Beyer’s Adrian Chhay (pin, 2:12).
Rodriguez compiled a 1-2 record at 175 pounds.
He topped Santa Teresa’s Alejandro Chavez (major decision, 9-1).
Martinez compiled a 1-2 record at 215 pounds.
He topped Davi’s Ben Ford (forfeit).
Jimenez compiled an 0-2 record at 126 pounds.
Honorio compiled an 0-2 record at 150 pounds.
Castillo compiled a 2-2 record at 120 pounds.
He beat Santa Teresa’s Mark Austin Mello (pin, 0:49) and Hayward’s Adrian Buttram (major decision, 15-6).
Gonzalez compiled a 1-2 record at 215 pounds.
He beat Modesto High’s Daniel Eguizabal (pin, 3:20).
Swenson compiled a 1-2 record at 120 pounds.
He beat Franklin’s Issac Garcia (pin, 0:36).
Mattox compiled an 0-2 record at 126 pounds.
