Central Valley’s girls wrestling program hosted a tournament Nov. 22 with the Hawks and crosstown-rival Bulldogs having a combined four individual grapplers medal at the 2024 Women’s Havoc in the Hawksnest.

Wrestlers from 28 different schools competed at the event.

“The growth in the tournament in itself shows how the sport of girls wrestling is expanding,” said Central Valley head coach Brandy Cordova.

The top three finishers in each weight class took home medals.

Giana Breshears was Central Valley’s lone medalist at the varsity level.

She took first in the 140-pound bracket.

“We expected her to do well,” Cordova said. “She’s going to have to work hard to maintain her status as a state qualifier.”

Breshears compiled a 3-0 record.

She topped Livingston’s Lexi Perez (pin, 3:41), Johansen’s Brendy Puckett (pin, 3:23) and Golden Valley’s Sienna Moua (decision, 11-9).

Ceres High had three wrestlers medal at the varsity level, including Dayanna Alvarez, Madeline Schultz and Abrianna Bautista.

Alvarez took first at 145 pounds.

She compiled a 4-0 record.

Alvarez topped Central Valley’s Evelyn Zambrano (pin, 1:10), Atwater’s Alexia Amador (pin, 0:40), Turlock’s Karley Wool (pin, 1:07) and Golden Valley’s Paytin Gastelum (pin, 1:25).

Schultz took first at 190 pounds.

She compiled a 3-0 record.

Schultz topped Pacheco’s Melaya Soto (pin, 2:36), Sierra’s Valeria Galvan (pin, 3:42) and Manteca’s Alana Sumaylo (pin, 1:08).

Bautista took third at 120 pounds.

She compiled a 4-1 record.

Bautista topped Livingston’s Graciela Lopez (pin, 1:20), Modesto High’s Kaknika Ket (pin, 0:57), Merced’s Mallory Morris (pin, 2:10) and Golden Valley’s Valeria Ramirez-Vargas (pin, 1:35).

Central Valley’s Evelyn Zambrano, Tarnjot Kaur, Vanesa Mendoza-Balbuena, Arely Camarena-Sanchez and Bella Contreras, and Ceres High’s Jazlyn Cisneros, Isabella Nungary, Mezmerian Zuniga, Abigail Schultz, Elizabeth Boyd, Aliah Ricaud and Jadasa Haro also competed at the Havoc tournament.

Zambrano took fifth at 145 pounds.

She compiled a 1-3 record.

Zambrano won by forfeit against Turlock’s Karely Wool.

She lost to Ceres High’s Dayanna Alvarez (pin, 1:10), Golden Valley’s Paytin Gastelum (pin, 5:09) and Atwater’s Alexia Amador (pin, 2:19).

“She’s shown a lot of improvement from last year. She’s working really hard.”

Kaur compiled a 2-2 record at 120 pounds.

She topped Manteca’s Alisha James (pin, 2:38) and Ceres High’s Abrianna Bautista (pin, 4:21).

Kaur lost to Johansen’s Azaria Valdez (pin, 2:58) and Golden Valley’s Valeria Ramirez-Vargas (decision, 13-8).

Mendoza-Balbuena compiled a 1-2 record at 155 pounds.

She topped Atwater’s Sayvianna Robinson (pin, 0:15).

Mendoza-Balbuena lost to Turlock’s McKenna Beavers (pin, 2:39) and Lathrop’s Kimberley Salazar-Torres (pin, 1:41).

Camarena-Sanchez compiled a 1-2 record at 170 pounds.

She topped Los Banos’ Delaney Valdes (pin, 1:13).

Camarena-Sanchez lost to Ceres High’s Elizabeth Boyd (pin, 2:26) and Beyer’s Angelique Murillo-Garcia (pin, 1:22).

Contreras compiled an 0-2 record at 237 pounds.

She lost to Atwater’s Rubyzely Rosas (pin, 0:57) and Los Banos’ Mikayla Mendoza (pin, 0:57).

Cisneros took fourth at 130 pounds.

She compiled a 2-2 record.

Cisneros topped Livingston’s Natalie Cervantes-Cruz (decision, 9-2) and Modesto High’s Shawnee Silva (pin, 1:13).

Nungary compiled a 1-2 record at 110 pounds.

She topped Golden Valley’s Anabell Camacho (pin, 1:52).

Zuniga compiled 1-2 record at 135 pounds.

She topped Lathrop’s Sareah Reed (pin, 2:19).

Abigail Schultz compiled a 1-2 record at 135 pounds.

She topped Edison’s Rosy Hernandez (pin, 0:40).

Boyd compiled a 1-2 record at 170 pounds.

She topped Central Valley’s Arely Camarena-Sanchez (pin, 2:26).

Ricaud compiled an 0-2 record at 110 pounds.

Haro compiled an 0-2 record at 125 pounds.
