Central Valley’s girls team improved to 1-1 after besting Buhach Colony 73-6 on Thursday in Ceres.

Spartans sweep Dawgs
Ceres High’s wrestling program hosted Grace Davis during the opening week of the Western Athletic Conference dual-meet season.
The visiting Spartans swept the Bulldogs on Senior Night at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium on Jan. 3.
Upperclassmen Makynzie Hale, Carmen Arce-Hayes, Destiny Maron, Jose Banuelos, Rocky Moss and Angel Ventura were recognized before their final home match.
Banuelos, Moss and Ventura are first-year grapplers.
“It takes a lot of courage and guts to wrestle,” said Ceres High’s boys Coach Adam Borges. “It’s not a sport that’s easy to pick up. They (Banuelos, Moss and Ventura) come to practice every day. They got a positive attitude. They never complain. I’m glad we have them on the team. I wish they would have come out a couple years earlier.”
Ceres High’s boys team lost 60-24 to defending WAC-champion Grace Davis.
“They’ve won our league the last four years in a row,” Borges said. “I wanted to see how we’d compete. The kids wrestled hard. The score doesn’t show the effort they put in.”
Parker Borges, Abraham Rodriguez, Aiden Cisneros and Hunter Hammons contributed to the Bulldogs point total.
Borges won by pin at 138 pounds.
Rodriguez won by pin at 165 pounds.
Cisneros (126s) and Hammons (285s) both won by forfeit.
Ceres High’s shorthanded girls team suffered a 30-18 loss while battling Grace Davis.
“We have 11 girls on the team,” Bulldogs' Coach Curtis Hulstine said. “There were only six here. Our numbers were low due to Christmas break.”
Ceres High won just one of the dual’s four contested matches.
Jaden Stahl prevailed by decision at 127 pounds. She managed to win despite being slowed by a shoulder injury and exhaustion.
“Just by looking at her, nobody understands how tough she is,” Hulstine said. “She always battles. She’s never out of match.”
“I was really tired,” Stahl added. “I didn’t give up. I knew I had to win for my team. My family was watching. It was definitely motivation. The pressure makes me do better.”

Arce-Hayes lost by pin at 132 pounds.
Jadasa Haro lost by pin at 117 pounds.
Hale won by forfeit at 192 pounds.
