Central Valley’s girls tennis team put the finishing touches on a perfect regular season last week.

The Western Athletic Conference-champion Hawks defeated Lathrop 9-0 on in Ceres on Oct. 14.

Central Valley improved to 13-0 overall and placed first in the WAC standings with a 12-0 mark.

“I’m very happy for the girls,” third-year head coach Nimrat Chahal said. “They deserve this. Credit goes to them. They’re the ones competing out there.”

Six Hawk senior players were recognized during last week’s match, including third-year members Lizeth Cazarez Perez, Melanie Chavez, Jasleen Kaur and Mikalynne Tapia, and newcomers Nivea Pacheco and Alexia Salamanca.

They may have competed at home for the final time.

Central Valley will most likely play on the road during the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section team playoffs.

“They got to be a part of something special,” Chahal said. “We wouldn’t have been able to win league without those girls. They were all very important parts of the team.”

The Hawks swept all six singles and three doubles matches versus the Spartans.

“We expected to win,” Chahal said. “We took care of business.”

Tapia prevailed, 6-2. 6-2, in No. 2 singles play.

Kaur prevailed, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 4 singles play.

Cazarez Perez prevailed, 6-4. 6-2, in No. 5 singles play.

Chavez and Vidal prevailed, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 2 doubles play.

Aleena Higle prevailed, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 1 singles play.

Aaliyah Jauregui prevailed, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 3 singles play.

Harkiran Sandhu prevailed by forfeit in No. 6 singles play.

Valerie Espinoza and Valeria Sanchez Luna prevailed, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 doubles play.

Roxana Orozco and Genesis Velazquez Pedraza prevailed, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 3 doubles play.

“All of our seniors won their matches,” Chahal said.

Previous members of the Central California Conference, the Hawks returned to the WAC this fall as part of the section’s league realignment plan.

Central Valley surpassed Chahal’s expectations.

“I didn’t know what the other teams had,” Chahal said. “I thought we’d finish in the top three. It was surprising we were able to dominate. But our girls put in a lot of hard work. I’m proud of them. They deserve the credit.”

Central Valley made program history during the regular season by amassing a perfect record and claiming its first-ever conference title.

“No tennis team, girls or boys, has accomplished what they’ve accomplished,” Chahal said. “It’s really cool. I’m proud of them.”
