Members of Central Valley’s boys and girls wrestling teams stayed busy during the holiday break.
Central Valley’s boys program had 13 individuals wrestle at the Pat Lovell Holiday Classic, which was staged Dec. 27-28 at Aptos High School.
The Hawks placed 15th in the team standings with 85 points.
“I’m proud of the kids,” head coach Rob Beckhart said. “They all worked hard. They’re learning a lot about themselves.”
Angel Melgoza took fifth with a 4-2 record in the 215-pound bracket.
He notched a pair of victories against Alisal’s Fabian Martinez (pin, pin).
He also collected wins against Hughson’s Luke Bridwell (pin) and Clovis’ Lucas Limon (pin).
Rotceh Mendez compiled a 4-2 record at 132 pounds.
He beat Everett Alvarez’s Raymond Miranda (decision) and Alexander Gijon (pin), Hollister’s Gabriel Horton (decision) and Capuchino’s Giovanni Morret (major decision).
Caleb Beckhart compiled a 3-2 record at 138 pounds.
He beat Sobrato’s Hamza Ghani (pin), Soquel’s Thomas Abrero (pin) and Capuchino’s Christopher Scerri (pin).
Carlos Zepeda compiled a 3-2 record at 190 pounds.
He beat Half Moon Bay’s Andres Haro Carrillo (technical fall), Casa Roble’s Jayden Branscombe (pin) and St. Francis’ D. Dominguez (pin).
Zack Esparza compiled a 2-2 record at 175 pounds.
He beat Christopher’s Jacob Weiler (pin) and Calaveras’ Keagen Brown (technical fall).
Sal Almazan compiled a 2-2 record at 285 pounds.
He beat Benicia’s Francesco Battaglia (pin) and Monterey’s Jaykob Ebrahim (technical fall).
Breighdon Swenson (120s), Sunny Breshears (150s), Anthony Diaz (157s) and Sean Vernon (165s) all compiled identical 1-2 records.
Central Valley’s girls program had seven grapplers compete at the 11th Annual Queen of the Hill, which was staged Dec. 27-28 at Corona High School.
The Hawks totaled 66 points while finishing in 18th place at the 116-team tournament.
“Overall, I am pleased with how our girls wrestled,” head coach Brandy Cordova said. “We are not going to these tournaments to win medals. Don’t get me wrong, bringing home medals is awesome, but we are looking more at getting good competitive matches.”
Brianna Espinoza took second with a 3-1 record in the 235-pound weight bracket.
She beat John Glenn’s Alexia Hernandez (pin, 2:16), Newbury Park’s Maya Garza (pin, 2:52) and Brawley Union’s Madison Vandiver (pin, 0:41).
Giana Breshears took sixth with a 5-3 record at 140 pounds.
She beat Highland’s Aryanah Singh (decision, 6-1), Hemet’s Aubrey Kelly (pin, 5:14), San Jacinto’s Abigail Malcom (pin, 5:14), Murrieta Mesa’s Sara Garcia (decision, 9-4) and Golden Valley’s Sarah Harthorn (decision, 4-2).
Alicia Espinoza compiled a 4-2 record at 170 pounds.
She beat Redlands East Valley’s Aaliyah Holtz (pin, 0:33), Roosevelt’s Soffia Renteria (pin, 0:37), Buena Park’s Stephany Gallegos (pin, 0:42) and Beaumont’s Malaya Magpali (pin, 1:41).
Tarnjot Kaur compiled a 1-2 record at 120 pounds.
She beat Ramona’s Josselyn Cruz (pin, 0:27).
Madelyn Morales compiled a 1-2 record at 130 pounds.
She beat Roosevelt’s Emily Alverez (pin, 1:17).
Arely Camarena compiled a 1-2 record at 155 pounds.
She beat Keppel’s Meagan Mejia (pin, 0:30).
