Central Valley’s wrestling program swept Patterson during the final week of the Central California Conference dual-meet season.
Central Valley’s girls team prevailed, 66-18, on Senior Night on Jan. 23.
“To be honest, we weren’t happy with the outcome,” Hawks’ head coach Brandy Cordova said. “We won because of the forfeits that we had. The actual three matches that we wrestled, we lost.”
Central Valley compiled a 5-1 record en route to a second-place finish in the CCC dual standings.
“I definitely think we could have done better. We didn’t showcase the skills our girls have against Golden Valley our first dual.”
Central Valley won its final five duals after opening the conference dual season with a 54-28 loss to Golden Valley.
“We still have the opportunity to be CCC co-champs if we place first in team points (at the CCC finals)."

“All three of them are a solid part of our varsity lineup,” Cordova said. “All three are very hard workers.”
Romero joined the team as a junior.
“She’s showing an aggression she didn’t have last year. She’s a leader in the room. She makes sure everybody does what they need to do.”
Hoffman and Alberto are newcomers to wrestling.
“It really didn’t surprise me in how quickly they picked up the sport. In flag football, they worked hard to try to make the team the best it could be.”
“Kalli doesn’t like to lose. She’s at another level. She reminds me a lot of Giana. They work well together.”
Central Valley’s boys team upset Patterson, 35-32.
“To be able to end the (CCC dual season) on a positive validates all the work the kids have put in,” Hawks’ head coach Rob Beckhart said.
Central Valley compiled a 4-2 record on its way to a third-place finish in the CCC dual standings.
“I’m happy for the kids,” Beckhart said. “They don’t give up. They have a reputation for being tenacious. You have to be at your best every week in this league or you’re going to lose.”
Down 29-22, the Hawks won two of the dual’s final three matches to stun the Tigers.
“It wasn’t looking good,” Beckhart said. “The kids wrestled hard and pulled it out. It was back and forth the whole night.”
Jayden Mattix’s third-round pin (4:48) of Kobe Williams in the 115-pound weight class cut the deficit to 29-28.
Mattix trailed 13-0 before winning by fall.
He improved his overall record to 5-18.
“Jayden threw the kid to his back and pinned him,” Beckhart said. “He just kept fighting. He didn’t worry about the score. He found his opportunity and took advantage of it. He’s done that one other time earlier this season.”
Kevin Mendoza’s second-round pin (2:47) of Alfredo Hernandez at 120 pounds gave the Hawks a 34-29 lead.
Mendoza cut weight the night before by running and using a Peloton.
“It’s only his second win of the season,” Beckhart said. “He deserved to win. He was aggressive. He works super hard.”
Caleb Beckhart didn’t win but prevented Patterson from winning the dual.
He lost by decision to Giovanni Perez at 126 pounds.
Beckhart competed with an injured ankle.
“He fought for his teammates,” coach Beckhart said.
“It wasn’t just those three guys,” he added. “Everybody wrestled well. It was a complete team effort.”

Eight Hawk upperclassmen were recognized during their final home match, including Deleon, Mendoza, Smith, Zuniga, Kenneth Orrin, Julian Lugo, Albert Gonzales and Damian Tapia.
“They’ve done a great job of setting a foundation and showing the younger kids the level of commitment it takes to be successful,” Rob Beckhart said.
