Central Valley High School’s wrestling program competed against El Capitan and Patterson during the opening week of the Central California Conference dual season.
Central Valley’s girls team topped the Gauchos and Tigers.
The 2021-22 CCC champion Hawks have won their last eight league duals dating back to this past winter.
“We’re very excited to have the numbers and girls that have the skill and determination to win these matches,” said Coach Brandy Cordova. “We have a very young program. We only have three seniors. I believe we’re going to stay strong. The girls are committed.”
Central Valley cruised to a 66-18 win over El Capitan on Jan. 3 in Ceres.
Brianna Espinoza won by pin (0:37) over Angel Hill at 235 pounds.
Jayden Corona won by pin (0:55) over Lupita Cervantes at 101 pounds.
Tarnjot Kaur won by pin (0:59) over Elise Anderson at 116 pounds.
Vanesa Mendoza Balbuena won by pin (2:25) over Odalys Orellana at 189 pounds.
Gabriella Ramirez won by pin (2:36) over Sienna Moua at 160 pounds.
Giana Breshears won by pin (3:37) over AnnMarie Wade at 143 pounds.
Soriah Corona (106s), Yahaira Torres (121s), Marianna Carranza (131s), Micaela Martinez (137s) and Taylor McGuire (150s) all won by forfeit.
Central Valley rolled to a 72-6 victory at Patterson on Jan. 5.
Itzel Romero won by pin (0:48) over Abby Rosales at 121 pounds.
Jayden Corona won by pin (0:54) over Piper Mirelez at 101 pounds.
Kaur (116s), Martinez (137s), Breshears (143s), McGuire (150s), Ramirez (160s), Espinoza (235s), Vanessa Mendoza (189s), Lexie Rendon (126s), Samantha Padilla (111s) and Soriah Corona (106s) all prevailed by forfeit.
The Hawks have placed first as a team in league three out of the past five years.
“The girls have bought into the program because we promote an atmosphere of family and inclusiveness,” Cordova said. “They’re actively recruiting. They’re trying to bring their friends into the (wrestling room).
Central Valley’s boys team won its CCC dual opener, 39-33, versus El Capitan.
Down 33-30, the Hawks won the final two individual matches to secure the hard-fought victory.
Caleb Beckhart defeated Parker Gibson (pin, 3:39) at 120 pounds.
Issac Lee defeated Allen Aguirre (decision, 8-3) at 126 pounds.
“They did what they needed to do to pull it out,” said Central Valley leader Rob Beckart.
Lee, Caleb Beckhart, Kenneth Orrin, Salvador Almazan, Angel Melgoza, Trey Anderson and Joey Zuniga contributed to the Hawks’ point total.
Orrin defeated Raul Guardado (pin, 1:07) at 170 pounds.
Almazan defeated Darian Vallaria (pin, 1:25) at 285 pounds.
Melgoza defeated Evan Webster (pin, 1:35) at 152 pounds.
Anderson defeated Cyrex Cinco (injury default) at 182 pounds.
Zuniga prevailed by forfeit at 132 pounds.
Host Patterson pulled away for a 50-28 win over Central Valley on Jan. 5.
“We did a good job of keeping it close,” Coach Beckhart said. “We were within one or two points. The last five matches got out of hand. We lost some matches that we could have won. It was a learning experience.”
“We’re young,” he added. “We’re going to have some growing pains. We’re working towards the future.”
Melgoza, Anderson, Mahkai Smith and David Contreras accounted for the Hawks’ individual victories.
Melgoza defeated Daniel Linares (pin, 4:50) at 152 pounds.
Anderson defeated Daniel Estrada (major decision, 18-10) at 182 pounds.
Smith defeated Tripp Skoien (pin, 0:55) at 220 pounds.
Contreras defeated Alfredo Hernandez (pin, 3:02) at 113 pounds.
