Ceres High’s football team turned in its most complete performance of the season last week.

The Bulldogs piled up a season-high 317 yards of total offense and allowed just one touchdown en route to cruising to a 34-7 homecoming win over visiting Beyer Friday evening at CUSD Stadium.

“We did everything we were supposed to do,” Bulldogs’ head coach Brett Johnson said. “We capitalized on a lot of opportunities. We focused on eliminating mistakes that we made in the past few games. Momentum-wise, we’re going in the right direction.”

Ceres High improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference standings.

Beyer dropped to 0-5 and 0-2.

“Hopefully, these upcoming weeks are even better,” Bulldogs’ junior receiver/defensive back Reis Smith said. “We are improving every day.”

“They’re finding their identity,” Johnson added. “You can see it in their game play. You can see the confidence. It’s encouraging.”

Ceres High had a balanced effort on offense as it totaled 164 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and 153 yards and two scores through the air.

The Bulldogs were forced to punt just three times.

“We took what was there,” Johnson said.

Ceres High junior running back Isaac Vizcarra had a breakout game.

He ran for a career-high 124 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

He averaged 7.8 yards per carry.

“We have a rotation of backs,” Johnson said. “He (Vizcarra) just happened to have the hot hand. He’s a really physical runner.”

“Our linemen opened some holes,” he added. “It was nice to see some space to run through.”

Isaiah Cardona rushed for 7 yards and one touchdown on five carries and grabbed one pass for 11 yards.

Ceres High starting quarterback Donovan Osuna completed 5 of 11 passes for 130 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

“Donovan is progressing,” Johnson said. “He’s doing the best with what we’re asking him to do.”

Backup QB Brayden Clark finished with 23 yards while completing both of his pass attempts.

Smith had 52 yards and one touchdown on one reception.

Smith, an all-league defensive back as a sophomore, has scored three times in the past two games.

“I’m really enjoying offense right now,” Smith said. “It’s a freedom.”

Senior Manny Mendoza caught two passes for 19 yards and one TD.

Chris King totaled 41 yards on one catch.

Gilbert Nuno converted all four of his point-after kicks, totaled 195 yards on six kickoffs and punted three times for 112 yards.

The Bulldogs had a host of contributors on defense.

Smith had three tackles and one pass deflection.

Vizcarra had five tackles.

Nikahli Garcia collected a career-high three sacks on his way to making nine tackles.

Vincent Castrejon had three tackles, two interceptions and two pass deflections.

Ernie Miranda had five tackles and one sack.

Nathaniel Macias had one tackle, one interception and two pass deflections.

Michael Solis and junior Manny Mendoza chipped in with nine tackles apiece.

Ben Leota registered four tackles.

Fabian Torres blocked a field goal.

“Our defense has been amazing,” Smith said.

“They’ve held their own all year,” Johnson added. “They rally to the ball. It’s a smart, aggressive group.”

Ceres High didn’t underestimate winless Beyer.

The Bulldogs took care of business in dominant fashion.

“That’s what we were supposed to do,” Smith said.

The mood in Ceres High’s locker room after the game was joyous.

“It was pretty crazy,” Smith said. “We were bumping music, screaming and dancing. It (winning) gives us momentum going into future weeks.”

Ceres High will host first-place Johansen (4-1, 2-0) this Friday at 7 p.m.

The Vikings won their first two conference games by a combined three points.

Johansen edged Mountain House 22-21 last Friday and Pacheco 28-26 on Sept. 15.

“We’re excited to play them,” Smith said.

“They’ve got a solid team,” Johnson added.
