Central Valley’s girls wrestling program faced its toughest challenge of the 2024-25 season this past month.
The Hawks placed 12th overall with a team score of 67 while competing at the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions, Dec. 20-21, in Roseville.
Central Valley finished ahead of fellow Stanislaus District competitors Central Catholic (16th place, 61 points), Grace Davis (29th, 40.5), Gregori (39th, 34), Merced (42nd, 33), Modesto High (46th, 31) and Downey (68th, 19).
Brianna Espinoza, Giana Breshears, Arely Camarena, Alicia Espinoza, Tarnjot Kaur and Evalyn Zambrano all contributed to the Hawks’ point total.
Brianna Espinoza posted a 4-1 record on her way to claiming a third-place medal.
She won by pin (3:07) and injury default (1:31) against Ukiah’s Harbor Ameperosa.
She also bested St. Francis’ Michelle Guerra Martinez (pin, 0:26) and Mt. Eden’s Kataya Friday (pin, 1:43).
Breshears posted a 2-2 record at 140 pounds.
She beat Fremont’s Haru Duus (decision, 7-2) and Ponderosa’s Paige Fletcher (pin, 4:59).
Camarena posted a 2-2 record at 155 pounds.
She beat Mt. Eden’s Amy Espinoza Garza (pin, 0:20) and Whitney’s Madison Fischer (pin, 2:20).
Alicia Espinoza posted a 2-2 record at 235 pounds.
She beat River City’s Danny Bennett (pin, 0:31) and Marysville High’s Eliza Sumait (pin, 1:58).
Kaur posted a 1-2 record at 120 pounds.
She beat Nevada Union’s Aislinn Phillips-Sanders (pin, 2:48).
Zambrano posted a 1-2 record at 145 pounds.
She beat Rio Americano’s Manuela Monteiro (pin, 1:46).
Hawk Madelyn Morales posted an 0-2 record at 130 pounds.
Central Valley’s Vanesa Balbuena-Mendoza and Angela Alvarado both medaled while competing in the junior-varsity division of the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions.
Balbuena-Mendoza placed second with a 2-1 record in the 143-146-pound bracket.
Alvarado placed second with a 2-1 record in the 149-154-pound bracket.
CYBS signups
Ceres Youth Baseball & Softball Organization is holding signups for the 2025 campaign.

CYBS is offering a prize for the 100th girl to sign up for the spring season.
She’ll receive an autographed Remember to Have Fun Adidas T-shirt from current USA Women’s Softball infielder/Athletes Unlimited pro player Nicole “Sis” Bates.
Bates, a 2016 Ceres High School grad and CYBS alumnus, returned home earlier this month to share her love and knowledge of the game. She staged a skills camp at Costa Fields on Dec. 21.
The 2025 CYBS season will get underway on March 28.
Each team will play a total of 12 regular-season games.
