The Goblirsch siblings are no longer rivals.

Derrick added older brother Clinton to his football coaching staff at Central Valley High School for the 2023 season.

Derrick previously matched wits with Clinton when he coached football and baseball at crosstown-rival Ceres High School.

Separated by just 21/2 years, Clinton and Derrick both played quarterback for the Bulldogs. Clinton and Derrick graduated from CHS in 2002 and 2005, respectively.

“To be able to coach together again is exciting,” Derrick said. “We felt like it was a good fit. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. He was the first one to teach me to be a student of the game.”

“I’m excited,” Clinton stated. “We’re both working on the offensive side of the ball. We both think alike. We bounce ideas off each other. It makes it enjoyable. We have a good relationship on and off the field.”

“He makes us better,” Derrick added.

Clinton will fill multiple roles with the Hawks, including running backs coach and offensive assistant.

He’ll also help out on special teams.

“He just loves being out there,” Derrick said. “He’s fit in nicely. He’s doing a good job of coaching up his guys. A lot of our coaches played for him.”

“I just want to come in, help out and fit in wherever he needs me,” Clinton said.

Derrick and Clinton coached JV football and baseball together at their alma mater during the 2010-11 school year.

“I enjoyed coaching with him but that was over 10 years ago,” Derrick said. “He’ll have even more to give because he has a lot more experience.”

Clinton helped turn around Ceres High’s football program.

He had a career record of 7-8 and led the Bulldogs to their first playoff berth since 2004 during his two-year stint as head coach (2020, 2021).

Ceres High totaled just eight wins from 2016-19, finishing 0-10 in 2019 and 1-9 in 2018.

The Bulldogs compiled a 5-6 overall record, finished in fifth place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 3-4 mark and advanced to the Division-V playoffs in 2021. Ceres High outscored its opponents, 336-224.

The Bulldogs went 2-2 and placed fourth in the WAC South standings (1-2) during the 2020 COVID-shortened season. Schedules consisted of just five games and no playoffs.

Clinton was Ceres High’s offensive coordinator for six seasons (2006-09, 2018-19).

He was defensive backs coach for one season (2014).

He was junior-varsity head coach for five seasons (2010-11, 2015-17).

Clinton served as head coach of Ceres High’s baseball program for seven seasons (2016-22).

The Bulldogs amassed an 80-83 record and qualified for section playoffs three times (2022, 2019, 2017) under his guidance.

Ceres High finished 23-7, second in the WAC standings (12-3) and advanced to the semifinals of the Division-IV postseason tournament during Goblirsch’s second year at the helm.

Derrick was promoted to head coach of Central Valley High School’s football program in 2020.

The Hawks made program history by completing their first undefeated season and capturing their second conference championship during his first year at the helm.

Central Valley won all five of its games and took first with a 4-0 mark in the WAC South Division standings.

Derrick coached Central Valley’s baseball team for nine years (2014-22).

The Hawks amassed an 87-122-5 overall record, claimed one league championship and qualified for the section playoffs once.

Central Valley made program history in 2022 by securing just its second playoff berth. Seeded 14th, the Hawks won one of two games while placing in the top eight in the Division-I bracket. Central Valley upset heavily-favored Elk Grove 3-2 in the opening round.

The Hawks claimed their first-ever conference championship and compiled a 14-4 record in 2021. Central Valley won eight of nine games against WAC South competition.

Derrick stepped down to spend more time with his family and focus on football.

“It (coaching) is something we both love doing,” Clinton said. “The opportunity to do it together makes it enjoyable.”

Derrick and Clinton cut off communication in the past while coaching at rival high schools.

“Once football season started, we didn’t talk to each other,” Derrick said. “We didn’t want to give away any secrets. Now, we talk every day.”

Parents Rick and Kimli will also get an opportunity to watch their sons coach together.

“They’re excited we’re on the same team and they’ll get to cheer us both on at the same time,” Derrick said.

“Our dad has helped out and done stats for the last couple years,” Clinton added.

Derrick earned eight varsity letters at Ceres High, including four in basketball, two in baseball and two in football.

Clinton earned six varsity letters: two in basketball, two in baseball and two in football.

Clinton and Derrick played one season of basketball together.

Derrick (2004, 2005) and Clinton (2002) were both named Ceres High Male Athlete of the Year.

Father Rick (class of 1976) also won the same ward.

Mother Kimli (class of 1977) was a standout athlete with the Bulldogs as well.
