Five members of Central Valley’s boys wrestling program will compete at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships this week in Stockton.
Sunny Breshears, Angel Melgoza, Rotceh Mendez, Emilio Castillo and Sal Almazan qualified for Masters after finishing in the top four in their respective weight divisions at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Championships on Saturday at Johnson High School in Sacramento.
Central Valley’s Sean Vernon and Ceres High’s Parker Borges both fell one win shy of advancing to Divisionals.
“I’m happy with how they performed,” Hawks’ leader Rob Beckhart said.
“We had a great week of practice,” Bulldogs’ head coach Adam Borges said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t have anyone move on. It didn’t work out our way.”
Central Valley and Ceres High finished fifth and 22nd, respectively, in team scoring.
The Hawks and Bulldogs earned 145.5 and 22 points.
Sutter (181), Grace Davis (165.5) and El Dorado (156) placed 1-2-3.
“I really thought we had a chance to win the tournament,” Beckhart stated. “There were some good teams there.”
Breshears took second at 144 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record.
“Sunny wrestled really well,” Beckhart said. “He’s starting to be a little more aggressive. He’s maturing as a wrestler. He puts in a lot of time and effort. I’m glad it’s paying off for him.”
Melgoza took second at 215 pounds. He posted a 3-1 record.
“Angel was dominant like always,” Beckhart said.
Beckhart pulled Melgoza from the tournament after he dislocated his right elbow in the semifinals.
Melgoza’s status for Masters is uncertain.
“He had it reset on Monday,” Beckhart said. “We’ll see how it feels. We’re not committed one way or the other. His health is more important than wrestling.”
Mendez took third at 132 pounds. He posted a 4-1 record.
Castillo took fourth at 120 pounds. He posted a 4-2 record.
Almazan took fourth at 285 pounds. He posted a 4-2 record.
Vernon was named an alternate for Masters following his fifth-place showing at Divisionals. He posted a 3-2 record at 157 pounds. Vernon also topped Rio Linda’s Haroon Naveed (decision, 10-6).
Parker Borges was named an alternate for Masters following his fifth-place finish in the 144-pound weight bracket.
“If his season is done, it’s not what he wanted,” coach Borges said.”
Parker Borges compiled a 4-2 record at Divisionals.
“He wrestled well,” coach Borges said. “Unfortunately, he lost to the same kid twice. For some reason, we couldn’t figure out a way to beat him.”
Parker Borges medaled at four of six tournaments this year.
“I’m proud of him,” Adam Borges said. “He had a great season. He worked extremely hard. He did a good being a role model.”
