Central Valley’s shorthanded boys soccer team notched a pair of league wins last week.
Offensive standouts Alejandro Garcia and Enrique Lopez were both sidelined during the Hawks’ matches against Grace Davis and Pacheco during the second round of Western Athletic Conference play.
Garcia and Lopez were on vacation with their families.
“I was confident we’d perform well based on how good the rest of our players are,” head coach Horacio Garcia said. “Our roster is rich and talented.”
The first-place Hawks improved to 12-5-6 overall and 7-0-2 in WAC play following Thursday’s 4-2 victory over host Pacheco.
The second-place Panthers dropped to 11-4-1 and 5-3-1.
Central Valley increased its lead over Pacheco to seven points in the league standings.
“It was a key match because they were four points behind us,” coach Garcia said. “They would have cut our lead to one point if they won.”
The Hawks earned a season sweep versus the Panthers as they won the first meeting by a score of 5-2.
“This game was a lot more competitive,” Horacio Garcia said. “It took us a while to get adjusted to playing on turf. Once we settled in, we controlled the pace of the game.”
Ivan Cervantes, Oscar Monzon, Santiago Morales and Diego Ochoa all scored one goal for the Hawks.
Adrian Serrano and Tahte Yang both collected one assist.
Goalkeeper Osvaldo Cisneros had two saves.
Central Valley led 2-0 at halftime.
“All of our players contributed to the win,” Horacio Garcia said.
Central Valley edged Grace Davis 2-1 on Jan. 21 at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.
The Hawks won the first meeting, 5-1.
“We dominated both halves,” coach Garcia said while assessing his team’s performance against the Spartans this past week. “We just struggled to capitalize on our opportunities.”
Cervantes and Monzon led Central Valley with one goal apiece.
Ochoa collected one assist.
Cisneros made two saves.
The Hawks led 1-0 at halftime.
Cervantes converted a free kick in the 20th minute.
Monzon tallied what proved to be the winning goal off an assist from Ochoa with five minutes to play.
He scored from close-range with his left foot.
“Lucky for us, it went in,” Horacio Garcia said.
Coach Garcia moved Monzon from left midfielder to striker during the final 20 minutes of the game.
“He doesn’t usually play that position,” Horacio Garcia said. “I decided to give him an opportunity and he took advantage of it.”
Monzon helped Central Valley extend its unbeaten streak to eight games.
Dawgs rebound
Ceres High’s boys soccer team bounced back this past week after losing 3-0 to crosstown-rival Central Valley.
The Bulldogs moved to 7-6-5 overall and 4-4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference following Thursday’s 1-1 tie against Johansen at CUSD Stadium.
Ceres High climbed to third place in the WAC standings.
Johansen (8-8-3, 1-5-3) remained in last place.
Leo Baez accounted for the Bulldogs’ lone goal.
Jayson Trevino assisted.
Baez and Fernando Galvan both scored once during Ceres High’s 2-1 road victory versus fifth-place Livingston (7-6-1, 4-4-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Central Valley’s girls soccer team improved to 16-1-1 overall and 9-0-0 in the Western Athletic Conference standings this past week.
The first-place Hawks extended their unbeaten streak to 14 matches with a 15-0 win against the last-place Pacheco Panthers (2-12-1, 0-8-0) on Thursday at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.
“I don’t know what to say,” Central Valley head coach Miguel Larranaga stated. “I used all of my players. I tried not to be as aggressive.”
Ayleen Apreza led the Hawks with six goals and two assists.
Aaralyn Jauregui had three goals and four assists.
Amirrah Cornielle had three goals and one assist.
Evelyn Rivera had two goals.
Marcella Larranaga had one goal and one assist.
Ashley Juarez and Anali Mendoza both had one assist.
Magnolia Tavizon had one save at goalkeeper.
Central Valley topped Grace Davis 4-1 on Jan. 21 in Modesto.
Hawk Amirrah Cornielle collected one goal and one assist against the fourth-place Spartans (11-7-0, 5-4-0).
Apreza, Jauregui and Mendoza all contributed one goal.
Mia Mendoza dished out two assists.
Tavizon totaled five saves.

Ceres High’s girls soccer team responded in a positive way after losing 2-0 to crosstown-rival Central Valley.
The Bulldogs earned one win and one tie this past week in Western Athletic Conference play.
Ceres High (7-6-2, 5-2-2) climbed to third place in the WAC standings following Thursday’s 2-1 triumph at fifth-place Johansen (8-5-3, 4-4-1).
Sharryah Cabellos accounted for both of the Bulldogs’ goals.
Melanie Lopez contributed one assist.
Ceres High and Livingston battled to a 0-0 tie on Jan. 21 at CUSD Stadium.
The Wolves (7-9-3, 3-4-2) remained in sixth place in the WAC after tying Beyer 0-0 on Jan. 23.
WRESTLING
Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s wrestling programs experienced mixed results at the Pitman Rumble XX Tournament on Saturday in Turlock.
Ceres High’s girls and boys posted a combined score of 173.5 en route to a third-place showing at the 34-team event.
The Hawks totaled 12 points while finishing in last place.
The Bulldogs had three individuals claim medals in the girls division, including Madeline Schultz, Dayanna Alvarez and Mezmeriah Zuniga.
Schultz placed first with a 2-0 record in the 192-pound weight division.
She beat Escalon’s Melanee Carrillo (pin, 2:48) and Aislinn Ingles (pin, 3:33).
Alvarez placed second with a 1-1 record at 147 pounds.
She beat Pitman’s Shyla Volk-Wood (pin, 1:47).
Zuniga placed second with a 2-1 record at 137 pounds.
She beat Delhi’s Alexia Sanchez (pin, 1:45) and Armijo’s Kimberly Truong (pin, 2:30).
Jaime Torres, Dakota Pickett and Daniel Tubera led Ceres High’s boys team.
Torres posted a 2-2 record at 190 pounds.
He beat Hilmar’s Isaiah Gil (pin, 1:18) and Stagg’s Shaun Ameperosa (pin, 1:55)
Pickett posted a 2-2 record at 157 pounds.
He beat Denair’s Guillermo Arguelles (pin, 0:47) and Monterey Trail’s Keiarie Hollis (forfeit).
Tubera posted a 2-2 record at 132 pounds.
He beat Franklin’s Vincent Bui (pin, 2:44) and Stagg’s Joe Rodriguez (decision, 11-10).
Jayden Mattox led Central Valley’s boys team.
He posted a 3-2 record at 126 pounds in the boys division.
Maddox beat Linden’s Jackson Bottoms (pin, 1:30), Monterey Trail’s Hasani Brooks (pin, 2:29) and Sanger West’s Jonathan Madrigal (major decision, 15-4).
Hawk teammate Emilo Castillo posted a 1-2 record at 120 pounds.
He beat Franklin’s Giovanni Martinez (major decision, 10-1) and Gregori’s Gavin Hill (decision, 10-6).
JAG Memorial
Central Valley’s girls wrestling program placed 23rd overall with a team score of 45 while competing at the JAG Memorial on Jan. 25 at Gregori High School.
Tarnot Kaur led the Hawks with a second-place finish in the 127-pound weight bracket.
She compiled a 3-1 record.
Kaur beat Modesto High’s Shawnee Silva (pin, 3:36), Linden’s Madalyn Alvarez (pin, 5:19) and Lincoln’s Maysah Charles (pin, 0:44).
