Hawks win wrestling title in Clovis

Central Valley’s girls wrestling program turned in a memorable performance at the Rodeo Invitational this past week in Clovis. The Hawks had a host of individual placers while finishing first in the team standings.

Central Valley’s girls wrestling program placed first while competing at the Rodeo Invitational this past week at Clovis East High School.

The Hawks posted a team score of 216 at the Dec. 9-10 event.

Central Valley finished ahead of 31 other schools, including Los Banos, Sanger, Gilroy, Selma, Kerman, Golden West, Highland, Central Valley, Redwood, Madera South, Mission Oak, Porterville, Granada, Buchanan, Clovis North, Clovis, Mount Whitney, Righetti, Exeter, Clovis East, Firebaugh, Bullard, McLane, Minarets, Pitman, Dinuba, Mendota, Buhach Colony, Clovis West, Edison and Sanger West.

“I knew my girls were doing well,” Hawks’ leader Brandy Cordova said. “But I wasn’t paying close attention to the team score until other coaches told me we were on top of the leaderboard. I was very excited for the girls.” 

Brianna Espinoza took second with a 2-1 record in the 235-pound championship bracket.

She collected wins against Golden West’s Jazmin Torres (pin, 0:39) and Bella Castellanoz (pin, 1:39).

Espinoza lost to Sanger’s Yvette Garcia (pin, 5:20).

Vanessa Balbuena took sixth with a 1-3 record in the 235-pound championship bracket.

She collected her lone win against Edison’s Sandra Salas (pin, 0:10).

Balbuena lost to Garcia (pin, 0:30), Torres (pin, 2:30) and Salas (pin, 0:30).

Giana Breshears took third with a 3-1 record in the 143-pound championship bracket.

She collected wins against Central’s Elizabeth Gonzales (pin, 3:34), Mission Oak’s Andrea Sanchez (pin, 1:35) and Sanger’s Gaby Flores (pin, 2:02).

Breshears lost to Pitman’s Alana Ontiveros (pin, 0:52).

Alicia Espinoza took first with a 3-0 record in the 170-pound consolation bracket.

She collected wins against Los Banos’ Maria Gonzalez (pin, 0:26), Righetti’s Emily Ramirez (pin, 0:55) and Central Valley’s Gabriella Ramirez (pin, 0:21).

Gabriella Ramirez took second with a 1-1 record.

Ramirez’s lone win came against Central Valley’s Destiny Marron (pin, 1:38).

She lost to Espinoza (pin, 0:21).

Destiny Marron took fourth with a 1-2 record.

Marron’s lone win came against Gonzalez (pin, 0:55).

She lost to Gabriella Ramirez (pin, 1:38) and Emily Ramirez (pin, 2:20).

Mia Mendoza took first with a 3-0 record in the 160-pound consolation bracket.

She collected wins against Firebaugh’s Adriana Becerra (pin, 0:16), Selma’s Magali Perez (pin, 2:42) and Kerman’s Alizabeth Velasquez (pin, 1:53).

Taylor Mcguire took second with a 2-1 record in the 150-pound consolation bracket. 

She collected wins against Mount Whitney’s Izabella Rosales (pin) and Mission Oak’s Uriah Gallegos (pin, 2:54).

Mcguire lost to Kerman’s Cassandra Covarrubias (pin, 0:56).

Marianna Carranza took second with a 1-1 record in the 137-pound consolation bracket.

Carranza’s lone win came against Madera South’s Eloisa Ruiz (pin, 0:48).

She lost to Kerman’s Ebony Cardenas (pin, 1:28).

Yazmine Mcclain took second with a 1-1 record in the 111-pound consolation bracket.

Mcclain’s lone win came against Exeter’s Valerie Chavez (pin, 1:27).

She lost to Los Banos’ Crystal Hernandez (pin, 0:59).

Tarnjot Kaur took third with a 2-1 record in the 116-pound consolation bracket.

She collected wins against Mount Whitney’s Tanya Valdez (pin, 0:54) and Los Banos’ Maya Zamora (pin, 0:26).

She lost to Sanger’s Sophia Benzier (pin, 2:34).

Rylee Randez took fourth with an 0-2 record in the 189-pound consolation bracket.

She lost to Granada’s Daniellah Banales-Vega (pin, 1:40) and Central’s Trinity Steiner (injury default).

Jayden Corona took fourth with a 4-2 record in the 106-pound consolation bracket.

She collected wins against Central Valley’s Keilany Torres (pin, 1:44), Kerman’s Jasmine Rodriguez Bucio (pin, 1:46), Redwood’s Mia Santibanez (pin, 0:40) and Firebaugh’s Fabiola Gutierrez (pin, 0:57).

Corona lost to Exeter’s Paige Tankersley (pin, 4:25) and Mount Whitney’s Jaydin Lopez (pin, 1:42).

Keilany Torres took seventh with a 2-2 record.

She collected wins against Santibanez (pin, 0:30) and Clovis North’s Isabel Rojas (pin, 0:14).

Torres lost to Corona (pin, 1:44) and Central’s Gracy Teran (pin, 2:19).

Lucero Maciel took fifth with a 2-2 record in the 131-pound consolation bracket.

She collected wins against Sanger’s Maria Banda (pin, 2:33) and Edison’s Mia Alvarez (forfeit).

Maciel lost to Mission Oak’s Isabella Gamez (pin, 0:32) and Mount Whitney’s Emma Marquez (pin, 0:40).

Itzel Romero took fifth with a 1-2 record in the 126-pound consolation bracket.

Romero’s lone win came against Firebaugh’s Selena Sandoval (pin, 0:21).

She lost to Los Banos’ Karley Rocha (pin, 2:52) and Sanger’s Ashley Hernandez (pin, 1:37).

Yahaira Torres took eighth with a 1-3 record in the 121-pound consolation bracket.

Torres’ lone win came against Righetti’s Abigail Roland (pin, 1:21).

She lost to Madera South’s Evangelina Mejia (pin, 1:05), and Sanger’s Ruby Contreras Martinez (pin, 1:31) and Gao Chia Vang (pin, 2:37).


Bulldogs medal

Three members of Ceres High School’s girls wrestling team brought home medals from the Bristow Brawl, which was staged on Dec. 3 at Atwater High School.

“It’s the first time we’ve gone to the tournament since me and Casey (Paulino) have coached at CHS,” Bulldogs’ leader Curtis Hulstine said. “We wrestled really tough.”

Madeline Schultz took first in the 170-pound weight class.

Makynzie Hale and Jazymne Arendt placed third at 189 and 160 pounds, respectively.
