Central Valley’s football team welcomed the challenge of competing against defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division-VI champion Hughson last week.

The host Hawks contributed to their own downfall by committing three turnovers en route to losing 42-0 to the Huskies on Friday at Ceres High.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” Central Valley head coach Derrick Goblirsch said. “We looked at it as an opportunity to see where we’re at. We have a long ways to go to be able to compete against a team like that. It was a learning experience.”

The Hawks dropped to 1-1 overall.

The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the season.

Hughson is vying for its third consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section championship this fall.

“They’ve had a lot of success,” said Goblirsch. “They’ve played in a lot of important games. That goes a long way in creating a good culture.”

The Huskies limited the Hawks to 163 yards of total offense.

“We knew we had to play mistake-free football,” Goblirsch said. “We had moments where we looked good. We were able to run on them successfully. The thing that hurt us was untimely penalties.”

Bryce McDaniel totaled 45 yards and one touchdown on six receptions.

“They had good athletes all over the field. Their skilled players were really fast.”

The Hawks fell behind 21-0 in the first half.

“We knew we had to play well early,” Goblirsch said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get that spark to give us some confidence and momentum.”

Central Valley’s best scoring chance came in the fourth quarter. The Hawks lost a fumble at the Huskies’ 10-yard line. Williams scooped up the ball and raced 95 yards for a touchdown.
