Central Valley’s and Ceres High’s girls wrestling programs had a host of grapplers compete at the Bristow Brawl on Saturday in Atwater.
The Hawks and Bulldogs won a combined 10 individual medals.
The top three wrestlers in each weight class were rewarded.
“Overall, we did pretty well,” Central Valley head coach Brandy Cordova said. “We liked what we saw. We saw progression in all of the girls. They’re working on getting better.”
“We’re trying to get as much mat time in before our league duals,” Ceres High leader Curtis Hulstine said. “Overall, we’re definitely improving. We’re getting better in all positions.”
Madeline Schultz, Dayanna Alvarez, Elizabeth Boyd, Olivia Duran, Eva Onsurez-Lopez, Jaden Stahl and Carmen Arce-Hayes represented the Bulldogs.
Schultz placed first with a 3-0 record in the 176-188 pound weight class.
She beat Central Valley’s Angelica Hernandez (pin, 1:16), Buhach Colony’s Iris Reyes (pin, 2:48) and El Capitan’s Audrina Moreno (pin, 2:06).
Alvarez placed first with a 3-0 record in the 129-140 pound weight class.
She beat Golden Valley’s Abigail Perez (pin, 1:48), West’s Daneya Cruda (pin, 0:25) and Mariposa’s Faith Lura (pin, 1:22).
Boyd placed third with a 3-1 record in the 156-171 pound weight class.
She beat El Capitan’s Mia Griffie (pin, 0:53), Livingston’s Luz Jessica Gomez (pin, 3:58) and Central Valley’s Adamariz Espinoza (pin, 0:36).
Duran tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 117-124 pound weight class.
Onsurez-Lopez tied for fifth with a 1-3 record in the 117-123 pound weight class.
Stahl tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 127-134 pound weight class.
Arce-Hayes tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 130-137 pound weight class.
Brianna Espinoza, Tarnjot Kaur, Alexa Cadenas, Giana Breshears, Divina Velasquez, Kalli Hoffman, Alicia Espinoza, Joslyn Vega, Keilany Torres, Marianna Carranza, Arely Camarena, Adamariz Espinoza, Angelica Hernandez, Kayla Fernandez, Jayden Corona, Janelle Heras, Alexa Alberto, Evalyn Zambrano, Karlee Taylor, Christina Menera, Itzel Romero, Corena McDaniel, Lucero Maciel and Emilia Barragan represented the Hawks.
Brianna Espinoza continued her run of dominance by taking first at the Bristow Brawl for the third year in a row.
Brianna posted a 3-0 record in the 192-234 pound weight class.
She beat Modesto High’s Angel Diaz (pin, 0:43), Atwater’s Ruby Rosas (pin, 0:57) and Buhach Colony’s Joana Lopez-Padilla (pin, 4:13).
“I wanted to fight for first again,” Brianna said. “It was challenging because the other girls have gotten better, too.”
Kaur placed second with a 2-1 record in the 117-123 pound weight class.
She beat Ceres High’s Eva Onsurez-Lopez (pin, 3:00) and Modesto High’s Praise Ingram (pin, 0:59).
Breshears placed second with a 2-1 record in the 135-147 pound weight class.
She beat West’s Jessica Santos (pin, 0:39) and Buhach Colony’s Alexy Zamarripa (pin, 3:43).
Cadenas placed second with a 2-1 record in the 130-137 pound weight class.
She beat Buhach Colony’s Neveah Russo (pin, 3:27) and Ceres High’s Carmen Arce-Hayes (pin, 2:13).
Velasquez placed third with a 3-1 record in the 101-110 pound weight class.
She beat Atwater’s Angie Basurto (pin, 2:06), El Capitan’s Lupita Cervantes (pin, 2:23) and Golden Valley’s Rain Medina (pin, 3:59).
Hoffman placed third with a 3-1 record in the 139-150 pound weight class.
She beat Atwater’s Ariana Aguado (pin, 0:39), Gregori’s Isabella Torres-Fonseca (injury default) and Golden Valley’s Paytin Gastelum (pin, 0:38).
Alicia Espinoza placed third with a 3-1 record in the 168-176 pound weight class.
She beat Buhach Colony’s Daret Flores (pin, 0:28), Chavez’s Noemy Anaya (pin, 0:24) and El Capitan’s Anika Niles (pin, 3:35).
Vega placed fourth with a 2-2 record in the 108-113 pound weight class.
Torres placed fourth with a 2-2 record in the 112-117 pound weight class.
Carranza placed fourth with a 2-2 record in the 127-134 pound weight class.
Camarena placed fourth with a 2-2 record in the 143-155 pound weight class.
Adamariz Espinoza placed fourth with a 2-2 record in the 156-171 pound weight class.
Hernandez placed fourth with an 0-3 record in the 176-188 pound weight class.
Fernandez tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 99-108 pound weight class.
Corona tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 104-112 pound weight class.
Heras tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 104-109-pound weight class.
Alberto tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 124-133 pound weight class.
Zambrano tied for fifth with a 1-2 record in the 141-150 pound weight class.
Taylor tied for fifth with an 0-3 record in the 158-169 pound weight class.
Menera placed seventh with an 0-2 record in the 158-169 pound weight class.
Romero placed eighth with an 0-3 record in the 117-124 pound weight class.
McDaniel placed eighth with an 0-3 record in the 129-140 pound weight class.
Maciel placed eighth with an 0-3 record in the 130-137 pound weight class.
Barragan placed eighth with an 0-3 record in the 139-150 pound weight class.
