The Mae Hensley Jr. High wrestling program ended the 2013 season on a positive note.
The Warriors captured their first team trophy under head coach Steve Festa's guidance with a third-place finish at the El Portal Invitational on March 23 in Escalon.
Mae Hensley compiled an impressive 11-2 dual-meet record this year.
"Our team made history," said Festa, seventh-year leader of the Warriors. "It means a lot to me.
Mae Hensley beat Savage (88-18), Turlock (68-36) and Salida (59-28) at the El Portal tourney.
The Warriors lost to eventual-champion Somerset (54-42) in the second round.
Mae Hensley's varsity lineup featured Noah Young (80 pounds), Frankie Mendez (85s), Brian Becerra (90s), Ethan Rotondo (95s), James Cervantez (100s), Matthew Soares (105s), Alexis Bonilla (110s), Adrian Ortiz (115s), Robert Castleman III (120s), Aiden Moore (125s), Isaiah Gutierrez (130s), John Alba (135s), Cody Beard (140s), David Caravalho (145s), Daniel McElwain (150s), Diego Diaz (160s), Conner Johnson (170s), Severo Vazquez (185s), Nic Webb (210s) and Tyler Cazares (HWT).
Alba and Rotondo posted perfect records of 21-0 and 18-0, respectively, this season. John and Ethan both won all five of their matches in Escalon.
"We had an impressive season," Festa said. "Our kids were rewarded for their hard work. We had fun. I'm very excited to see what this group can do at the next level."
